  1. NES' soundchip is builtin CPU. If your purpose is making a midibox with NES soundchip you can take NES' CPU. Sound out directly through pin 1 and 2 of NES' CPU. For guy who want making music on real NES you can use a Nes tracker and test your tune on a special cartridge who use SD card for loading any game or Nes sound format. This cart is for using on Famicom hardware, but with an 60 to 72 pin adaptor you can use on US or PAL NES.
  2. Hum... But how change OPL3 soundbank under Windows ?
  3. Humm.. No bonus to use SNES chip instead orriginal 2a03. The 2a03 is just a 6502 with some custom sound capability. In first SNES chip was designed for a retro compatibility with NES games, but Nintendo gave up the project of using NES game on SNES. But luckily 65c816 CPU kept all core of the 2a03. Some very few games use PSG fonction of the 2a03 (Super Gameby use it). But SNES APU is totaly separate from the rest of the SNES componment (it has its own bus and work without any other CPU). The 2a03's sound is produce by 65c816 not by SNES APU. Thus is no advantage (or disavantage) to use SNES CPU. Jaiced ---> Multii tracked ? What do you mean ? This music run on real hardware (MP3 in this thread was recorded from a PAL NES)
  4. I would to up this topic, MidiBox NES APU is a very good idea, and for example I would to show you what kind of music NES is able to produce. This music is make without any treatments or filters. It run on real NES (MP3 is record from a PAL NES) . MP3 for direct listening : http://wellby.dyndns.org/dnl/gk/snd/dl.mp3 NSF dump format : http://wellby.dyndns.org/dnl/gk/snd/dead_lock.nsf NSF player for listening NSF : http://wellby.dyndns.org/dnl/gk/snd/virtuansf1015.rar
  5. OPL3 is a great FM based chip. But since Windows 98, generic driver who manage OPL3 use a crap patch for generating sound. If my memories serve me, Windows 3.1 use an alternate driver for managing OPL3. The driver is called "Voyetra Super Sapi FM driver" and deliver very good FM sound (in particular for percutions, bass sounds and layers). How then I use Voyetra patch uder Windows XP or 2k ? I would like to understand how OPL3's driver work in newer Windows versions. Can you help me ?
  6. No you misunderstood me. Tunderforce IV use the Megadrive's YM2612 but the driver and patchs are diferent from Sega's YM driver. It result of others sound, better than all others patch on this machine. However if you find how this driver works you will take it for sound production.
  7. Certain games like Another World, Tales Of Phantasia, Star Ocean use streamed music or SFX in game. For example, Tales Of Phantasia use streaming and sequenced music at the same time (in introduction, music is sequenced and lyrics is streamed from the cartidge). In conclusion, it is possible to play arbitrary note. Moreover, the sound effect in game is in real time and when the SFx is too big for SPC's memory, it read from cartidge.
  8. You should try with Technosoft driver (Thunderforce IV), it is totaly different than Sega 2612 driver and I think it's better. However, YM2610 (Neogeo) is a good sound chip. Try it !
  9. Oh thank, but this guy describe his own experience about POKEY. But no spec, no number of voice or ocilllators... No informations about POKEY chip. How programers make POKEY emulator without datasheet ? Or, where I can find this datasheet ? And POKEY player ?
  10. Where I can find POKEY specification on the Web ? Or if someone can post tjis here... thank
  11. OK, thank all ! Can I modify OPL3 sound bank (on sound card) with MIDIBox FM software ? OPL3 "soundbank" is inclued in driver or not ? And Can I modify ? thank
  12. Yes I mean YMF262. But EMU chip is for wavetable synthetis with soundfont, not for FM. And these soundcard have a FM function with FM sound without FM soundfont (I checked the driver no fonts in Sb16 basic driver). If there is not YMF262 on these souncard how the FM sound is produce without soundfont ? With my original SB16, FM sound is different. The GM sound set, sound like "electro" under DOS\Win31 but with other version of Windows the GM FM set the drum is very cheap. Why ?
  13. I would ask if FM chip on "newer" AWE32 and 64 are an emulation or real hardware ? (for example CT2230, CT2760 and CT4250) On this card the YMF232 is not present on PCB. Another question : Why the FM sound is different between DOS and Windows ? FM sound produced by the card under DOS\Windows 3.1 is better than other OS (with the same card). FM patch on tese OS are very cheap. Thank
