Hi Rolfdegen sorry because i don't speak german, it seems very interesting your project, some month ago i was working and program on Arduino Card for controlling a DAC module to generate several voltages to control analogic symtheziser modules I build for this purpose, like a VCO based on six hex buffer 4069, a VCF steiner type, and a VCA with discrete compontes but ota style (with current mirrors ), I try to see your project and within some days i try to comment it Best Regards!!Hallo Seit Anfang diesen Jahres baue ich an meinen eigenen Synthesizer auf Basis eines ATxmega128A1 Mikrocontrollers und analogen Filterbeistein SSM2044. MfG Rolf -
I recently built a second FM synth and for the control lines RS A0 A1 RW I used a 14 cm flat cable and channels 3 & 4 sound good, and notes sound without anything strange or spurious
Although i bought some old creative sound cards, I found some YMF262 and YAC512 offers at ebay and Bought them, a few soldering and shorten control cables and I 've got clear sounds!!

Let me know what you think of that theremin.
I find it extremely beautiful, and the sound from the clips seems very good (after all it is a Paia based). Moduino midi implementation is told to be good too.
Hello Sergio
I saw the schematics of paia theremin and they seem very cool because their simplicity and quite good design, typical paia design, very interesting the concepts of signal math processing and... distortion... ( not harmful, if not beneficial in order to get great sounds!! ) and quite pretty design of case and front panel, besides that the midi module adds some interesting features to the system, so enjoy it!!
Have fun!!

Piacere!!
Todo bien che, te lo digo de onda!!!
ok, I have two citizenship, argentina, and italian, 'cause my mother was italian so i love Italy and their people and history, i have italian aunts and uncles living in Australia and i call them often
Well, as soon as i could see the theremin, i'll write you back to tell you what that theremin seems to me
Salutti!!!

Hello Ser_Yo, thank you for reviving that old thread, it's a really interesting issue for me, but i couldn't see the link here at work due to restritions in the access to some sites, implemented in this institution because they say Internet it's only for academic use here, tonight at home i will see it.
By the way, in my native language "Ser_Yo" sounds like "it's me", although in this case it must be "Soy_Yo", please, what country are you from?
thank you again for sharing this information
cheers!!

its difficult and only a few can do it:
Some of the performers at this concert were very good, others not quite so hot. I know because I was there!
I saw the video! Lydia Kavina seems to be good!
By the way the video shows some people watching this event, can I see you there? the video cam focuses at some faces
-
If you've never played a Theremin, the cheaper ones especially, its like trying to play a concert on a rubber band, its difficult and only a few can do it:
Some of the performers at this concert were very good, others not quite so hot. I know because I was there!
Generally, something like you are describing would use light dependent resistors or infra red sensors. T
HTHS
Ok, i notice the dificulties seeing the videos and a few performes achieves good tunning notes, although volume control (like a VCA ) is less critical, but hear detects very little pitch changes or interval ratio when moving around the pitch change antenna.
Ah, really interesting the use of sensors at light or infrared range, thanks for the data

Is the idea to get a Theremin MIDI controller or to build a Theremin with a micro controller?
Some say only a unit using valves can be considered a Theremin.
Think you are probably better off asking at Theremin World.
The basic idea i imagine is moving hands around the device it could generate midi code control, to play any midi device
although at first it sounds good i need to figure out the dificulties to lead it to a practical design, one a DIY could build

a MIXER of both osc? ( fixed and variable )
A RING MODULATOR to combine both signals ( mathematically ) and then a Low pass filter ( would be better a VCF? )...
see this...

Hi everybody! today i was thinking ( sometimes i did ) and seeing schematics of theremin's so I thougt: why not? and more... with a microcontroller?? after all... what kind of mistery is a theremin? what does it include? a crystall oscillator? we know about that... a variable oscillator? we also know what it is ( are we fan's of VCO's ? ) a mixer of both osc? ( fixed and variable ) but can we control the overall process with a microcontroller ( In this case please help!!! ) ? it sounds interesting...
well i was searching and i saw this site:
http://www.gaudi.ch/OpenTheremin/
and different stages: ( fixed osc, microcontroller improvement, prototype with wooden case, etc )
http://www.gaudi.ch/OpenTheremin/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49&Itemid=58
http://www.gaudi.ch/OpenTheremin/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=51&Itemid=59

For the case i think a router case with two antennas could be used... well my mind speed increases with this idea! ( although it is a little slow! i'm speaking of my mind of course!! )
And what about of controlling a PIC with two antennas? ( pitch and volume ) maybe trough de ADC inputs? and output it as MIDI ? sounds great...
It seems to me very interesting issue,

SID and FM chips were a quantum leap in computer sound. Before SID it was all beeps (and afterwards too).
FM provided better sounds, although we tend to think some of them are cheesy now.
By the time sample playback became more popular it all got a bit dull and boring. Hence why nobody (to my knowledge) really builds things that play samples using old sample playback chips.
The SID chip was more memorable than the Paula chip in the Amiga.
"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" It could be said two ( SID and OPL3 ) giants leaps for our comunnity ( Midibox ). I agree sample chips have no power to lift our spirit up like ( specially ) the SID has its great power of sounds that invades our souls. I don't know if anyone else, outside our community, could appreciate this legendary chips, a "middle age" between analog and digital ages, as to say digital control but powerful analog sound...
-
Do the electronic components has a karma?
If so - OPL3 and SID's has a good one! :twitch:
Could it be they have one, when we see an old sound board we run to buy it ( if we saw the chips on them. Could it be we'll become experts to recogniza the YMF262, we develop something like an eagle's eye to see that chips they seem to be reborn each time we find and reuse them

Thanks again - the third error: wrong link, wrong enumeration, wrong supply voltage - ok, I created the schematic at new year's eve and was in hurry... ;-)
The supply voltage is 3.3V since the output pins of the LPC17 UARTs don't support open drain mode which would allow to pull the voltage to 5V.
Note: using 3.3V for the 1k pull-up at the output of the optocoupler shouldn't cause an issue.
I changed it this way to avoid one additional cable to a +5V pin.
Best Regards, Thorsten.
Hi Thorsten, I test the MIDI IN/OUT with 3.3 V and they work perfectly. No problem with 3.3 V on optocoupler. MIDI OUT #3 with 3.3V works well.
Thanks Thorsten for your support
Best Regards, Alberto

Ok, I opened that file, only one doubt more: is it 5 Volts or 3.3 Volts in both MIDI OUT'S ( #3 and #4 ) because on the Core LPC17 Schematic on both MIDI OUT, #1 and #2, there are 3.3 Volts ( after the 220 ohms resistors )
I had used both #1 and #2 MIDI OUT ( 3.3 VOlts ) and they are working well
Thanks for your reply
Best Regards

Last Saturday a batch board's seller told me "I show you the newest ones", then I told him "no..., Please, show me the oldest ones" so I found two with the YMF262 and the yac512!! of course I bought both boards
So, before those boards would go to the rubbish dump I rescue ( I paid the boards = rescue ) the FM chips on their way to the skip...
well a philosophical thought...

Hi,
I added mine

Hi, I tried this link,
http://www.ucapps.de/mbhp/mbhp_core_lpc17_midi3_extension.pdf
But I couln't open it
'cause a I need to connect more devices, I tought to use one more MIDI in/OUT ( #3 ) and two or three IIC modules
I have my third SEQ_V4 working but i need more Midi IN/OUTs
Sorry, I saw this:

There's mention on the Wiki about not having the wires between the core and the OPL board too long.
http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=home:project:midibox_fm
See "Control Cable Timing Issue".
Ok, I followed that link and read it. What I noticed ocurred testing control lines with test_interconnection program.
-
... I don't really know but I have my own ( recent ) experience in this way with the OPL3 board, and I want to share it. After I published the pictures of my FM board, happy with the new sounds ( on audio channels 1-2), I test the channels #3 and #4 and no sound at all!! then I try some things like to reflow the tin joints, to shorten the flat cable, test_interconnection software and here there was a weird thing happened: when I hit the DO and DO# keys ( in sequence ) a "click" was heard on #3 and #4 channels ( the same thing on #1 and #2 ) then I thought the four channels could be right, then I remembered i recompiled the firmware with the option "AOUT_NG" enabled and this cause some upload errors, so I thought "could it be the recompiled firmware the problem in this case? I thought it due to the following reasons:
I changed channel (to #3 and #4) on Ensamble menu and nothing happens ( Only #1 and #2 working )
I set no audio channel at all and sound continues on #1 and #2
Then I download the compiled hex version ( v1 ), Upload it with MIOS STUDIO and... Crystal and beatiful sound on #3 and #4 channels!! :)
But at first some "symptoms" were that similar to what were described (0.28 V on pin 22 C/D; 3.62 V on pin 21 A/B ) in this post:
Well, only a curiosity... but may be it could be helpful... I don't know...
-
Yes, I asked for that board and to show me the other boards to see if they have the chips
-
I didn't add mine yet because next saturday I will buy a batch of sound boards ISA and then I will see wich one has the chips, I just called the seller a few minutes ago and he sets aside that boards for me. The site is this:
http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-139128508-placa-de-sonido-isa-_JM
Well, I don't know how to add the cards model to the wiki, do I have to create a new user? or with the user and password of this forum I could sign in the wiki?
I'm sorry, I forgot an explanation in the margin: $14.50 of my country is almost 3.30 USD each board.
-
I found also a sound card with YMF262: Analog Devices Ad1848 Mf-009
-
I am assured that I should expect the testtone on channel 3+4, but right now I can only start thinking up unlikely explanations such as, the YMF262 really is not outputting on channels 3+4, since the output on DOCD pin is 0.28V (effectively logic low all the time?) whereas DOAB is 2.24V (an average of logic low and high?)
What else could I possibly do to work out what's wrong?
I read this words and I remember my own ( recent ) experience in this way with the OPL3 board, and I want to share it. Hi ilmenator, I had the same issue but with a smt32, one LCD works fine, both -> garbage. It appears when suply voltage with the PC through USB cable, and fix it changing a 74HC595 with a 74HCT595 instead. so now it's working fine, but what you wrote ( and what Thorsten wrote ) is very important to me to understand the problem, may be a voltage level problem? in my case it seems i think due to the use of a 74HCT595, I'm not sure
Thanks to Thorsten and you for this contribution
