  1. Hello! I ran into peculiar problem with my good old Sammich and can´t figure out what might be the problem. Any tips are more than welcome :) I built the thing myself about 6 years ago. It has worked fine for a long time but after a small break i noticed this: Left output functions OK. RIght output is completely dead. I swapped the SID chips to see if it was the chip but the problem remained the same i.e. sound comes from left but not from right. So the SID chips seems OK. Then i swapped the M74.. IC´s below the SIDs but no change in the issue. So I tried to probe-listen directly from the SID audio out pin and the left SID sounds ok and right one gives some quiet hiss/crackle (not completely dead as in the audio output though, but also not noticeable notes). In other words both SID chips works just correctly but not when installed to the right side/right output. Been trying to search for bad soldering (well, i´m not too pro but still haven´t found any actualy mistakes or cold joints) but i´m wondering what the heck might cause this problem? I have a couple of different wallwarts with appropriate specs, and as I mentioned, this thing has worked before for some years... Thanks!! :)
  2. I was hoping that someone a little more well-versed in wavetable sequencing could help me out. I'm pretty comfortable with 90% of the features in my sammichSID, and it's my go-to synth when it comes to complex sound design (the mod matrix, the crazy envelopes, six oscillators and two filters to play with; the only thing I own that's more powerful is my K2000, and it's not nearly as fun) but I've stayed away from the wavetable sequencer until now. However, I find myself wanting to roll my own drum sounds (and perhaps experiment with the other sound design possibilities that the WTs open up) and that is gonna require me to learn. For the most part, it actually all feels pretty straightforward. I understand the concept, I've played with parameter sequencing on other synths before, and I'm used to the limited interface of the sammichSID by now. The one thing I can't wrap my head around, however, is the waveform parameter. In the parameter chart here, the "description" column shows the parameter as a 7-bit number (0-127), with each bit controlling a different flag. However, the "range" column claims that this parameter only goes from 0-15 (4-bit number). Then there's the "reset" column, which in other parameters seems to be the "off" or "neutral" position (typically the highest, lowest or median value within the possible range), but here is mysteriously listed as "4." Can anyone elaborate on how this parameter works? FWIW, I tried to figure it out based on both trial and error as well as following the v1 WT tutorial. Trial and error got some interesting and reproducible results, but I still couldn't figure out what values corresponded to which waveforms. Following the tutorial (just the first section on creating a kick drum), I got some truly strange and inconsistent results, with each consecutive keypress slowly morphing from a tonal sound to noise before going silent; sometimes I could get this behavior to reset, while other times the sammichSID would just stay silent until switching patches. Really weird stuff. the only other thing I'm having a little trouble with is the relative values vs the absolute values. Do they function basically the same, and are just both present to accommodate different parameters that make more sense with one than the other? Or is there something more complex happening that I don't get? I only realized that both were present about halfway through my experimentation, so it's fully possible that some of my difficulties were due to setting the wrong type of value (ie setting +04 instead 04). Does that sound right? thanks for the help.

  5. Hi all, the beautiful community My midibox sid has just got born. I noticed some problems with the sound. On sidplayer mode some certain sounds are inconsistent. They are sounding low or none and some second you can hear them then again they sound low. I made a deep interconnection test and the result is: on step CS#, all digital pins are 0 as normal but D7=5V I am suspecting from one or both of the 74hc595. Any ideas? Thanks
  6. hi everybody . I purchased a sammichSID 2 years ago and i realized that i only hear the output from only one speaker when i insert the jack (stereo jack) to the bottom / all the way down, however , if i put / plug the cable halfway i listen by 2 speakers (but its like a mono sound i think). So , can somebody explain me which kind of jack cables i need ? maybe stereo jack ? perhaps i have an output issue ? I have donde the same with another cable and with 2 headphones and the same problem : cable inserted / plugged to the buttom . Thanks very much
  7. Hi everyone! I'm just done with my PIC Core and SID R3A, and I have a question to you guys. Basically everything went well, Mios works like a charm. I have the sid testtone app uploaded, no problem, I have the signal on the output. The question is that the Sid chip goes hot.... After a few secs I hardly could hold my finger on it... In the meantime the sound was fine. It's a pulled 8580R5 (5187) from my own C64, was working perfectly. Is it normal? Should the Sid be fitted with heatsink? What is the average normal temperature?   8. Hello all, I have recently completed a Sammich that has been sitting on a friends shelf for the last 4 years! I will explain what has happened so far to try and give a clear picture. The build went really well apart from a lifted pad which was repaired (this only affected the low power LCD backlight) and is now working. Everything electrical checks out, all test points are clear and there are no shorts, the correct jumpers are set for the 8508 SID's, the voltage jumpers are correct also. Basically the Sammich turns on and the LCD shows some black squares, then tells me: MIOS v1.9g ©2009 T Klose, and then goes on to say READY. I have an M-Audio 2x2 midisport usb interface, I have downloaded the latest MIOS Studio software (PC and Mac), and the latest setup_sammich_sid.hex, and the mios_v1_9g_pic18f4685.hex My problem is that no matter what i do, it doesn't seem to want to let me upload the hex file to the PIC/Sammich. when I first power on the sammich, if i press query in the mios studio immediately, i get the screen telling me its connected to the core and ready, and then i browse for the setup_sammich_sid.hex and hit start, and then it tells me it can't contact the core and to reboot the sammich, which i do, it tries to do it then it says it can't it and gives me an error saying: Upload aborted due to error #12: MIDI IN Frame ErrorNo response from core after 16 retries! It only ever seems to give me the connected to core message immediately after I power it on, and press query, and then only very briefly, from what i understand, it is supposed to keep polling every few seconds for an upload if it doesn't have mios/hex burnt in. I have tried doing this under windows 7 64bit, and OS X 10.10, using the same M-Audio 2x2 ( isee from the white/blacklist that this particular device may not work under OS X, hence why I'm trying under windows 7. I have looked at the troubleshooting guide, and done the midi loopback tests from the PC and the sammich, and the check out fine. I think i either have a duff midi interface, or something else is wrong. I will post some screenshots incase anyone else can help by looking at them, any help is greatly appreciated. [EDIT] I have now tried to upload the file from another 2 different types of midi interface on the Mac, but still have the same error in mios studio. [EDIT] I have just purchased a Neusonik uMIDI/O22 to test with, once it arrives i will give it a go and see if it makes any difference.
  9. Bonjour à tous! Actuellement entrain de souder mon premier SID, je fais face au problème suivant; Les C64 que j'ai récupéré sont équipés en 6581. On dit partout que les 6581 n'accepte que du 12V, or, mes C64 sont équipés de PSU de 9V... Ils fonctionnaient très bien (je les ai testés...). Comment dois-je donc terminer mon module SID??? Dois-je mettre les regulateurs de tension 12v, 9v? Dois-je mettre les condensateurs de 470pf ou de 22nf? Dois-je utiliser l'alim du C64 (+9v - +5V) ou celle du lecteur disquette qui l'accompagne (+12V - +5V)?? Merci les amis!
  10. Hi everybody, I just want to share my work. I've build my midibox SID in an all diy way, in order to learn and understand everything in the box, and make some modifications to the original project. here is some pictures: I have modified the original layout of the mbhp_core_v3 and mbhp_sid_v3 in order to remove the power components (I wanted to build an external power supply), and to make a stereo version of the mbhp_sid. I integrate a matrix mixer and an headphone amplifier, I also add a buffer to the separate output. The design of the mixer is based on the Ken Stone's matrix mixer CGS33 http://www.cgs.synth.net/ The amplifier is from sonelec-musique.com http://www.sonelec-musique.com/electronique_realisations_ampli_casque_005.html For the front panel I have used the aluminium etching process with ferric chloride for nameplate engraving. The box is made from medium density fibreboard. For the pic programming, I used my old pic programmer that I build 17 years ago. I had to modify the firmware of the MB6582 in order to get the control surface working without the multiplexed DIN & DOUT. If you want, I can share my PCB layout of the stereo sid and core. Voilà !   11. Hello, I will get a brown C64 today, which will complete my set of 4xcores, 4x6581 and 4x8580. I will use the optimized PSU set-up, and some things are not yet clear for me: - the 7805 are dropped because the PSU provides stable 5V - there is a 7809 to stabilize the 9VAC output, and combined with the 5VAC output, it provides 5VDC and 14VDC - the "Optimized PSU" document don't mention the MBHP_SID 78xx : do I need to put one 78xx by MBHP_SID, or can I use one 7809 for the 8580, then link the power to the three others, and the same for the 7812, or is it better to have all MBHP_SID their own 78xx to avoid ground loops?   12. I have two sammichSIDs (one is currently mangled to pieces in a box awaiting repair). Is it possible to connect them together via midi and double up on polyphony?
  13. I have been reading the manual trying to find a clue about this... So forgive me if I missed something obvious. I was under the impression that if the multi-engine was put in mono mode that there would be 6 mono-voice polyphony. I get three sounded notes on the left side, and three silent ones on the right side. Also I can only select one SID. The menu doesn't display two. Both SIDs are working because stereo mode sounds fine with three voice polyphony. Here is a video displaying my problem. You might need to turn up your volume.

    Didn't find anything with keyword "PSU" in the forum, so maybe I'm the most birdbrained guy around. So what, please type slowly... ;) This is my first (bigger) soldering project and I already finished the core and I'm working on the SIDmodule. To check voltages I need to connect it to the PSU, therefor I bought an original C=64 power supply.   15. Hey all, I have one of my two sammichSIDs up for sale. It's complete and comes with an Australian plugpack. I'm downsizing my setup and getting rid of a few things that are excessive. It's got green LEDs and 2x 6582a SIDs (I think, will double check). It has only been used in my home studio and has not been gigged or around smoke etc. Am looking for $250AUD for the lot.   16. Hi all, I am wisefire. I was kind of active on here a long time ago, and I promised that one day i'll be back to complete (and document) my Midibox SID. Well the time has come to build it. I have the version of wilbas MB6582 core board directly from wilba. The idea back when I bought it was to build my own control surface around it, to be honest if I could make that choice right now I wouldn't be so sure, but i've got all the buttons and stuff for it already so let's start this adventure! Soldering the resistors was first, here is a timelapse. The next evening came the capacitors. i'll keep you guys posted!

Since I haven't got the time to play around with it, and it has been sitting there pretty much unused since I built it, I want someone else to enjoy this fabolous thing! :smile: So: 100% complete MB-6582 (see attached pictures for colors) including 8x6582 chips (new old-stock) which is already in the unit. I also have an original C64 PSU which can be included if the buyer wants it - please note that this is the 230V european version! This is the result of the first batch-orders of PCB's and panels. I've put a lot of time into building and gathering the parts for this thing, so asking price is 6500 NOK (PayPal prefferable) incl. worldwide shipping.   21. Hey everyone! I have been working on my SID synthesizer for the past couple months. I have the Core and SID modules (that I got from SmashTV) assembled, and my parts for the minimal control surface finally came in the mail. I have attached images of the 2x20 LCD that I will be using. The problem I am having is that I do not know where to go to find documentation on how to wire this display up so that it will function with the rest of my modules. I bought it assuming that these universal displays have some sort of standardization. Given that you guys have set up an LCD display before what would you suggest? Now for the power supply. I am going to find an old C64 power supply for sale (the commodores I ordered did not come with them) and follow this schematic: http://ucapps.de/mbhp/mbhp_sid_c64_psu.pdf The ground, J2, and J3 go to an audio Jack but I don't plan on using one. I want to use the midi out to connect to my computer where I hope to control my synthesizer in Propellerhead Reason 7.     We finally finished soldering the SIDFB module boards! Each board contains two SIDs and their shift registers; a CD4052-based digitally-controlled filter capacitor switching circuit, 4 pairs capacitors per SID; LM1973-based digitally-controlled audio attenuators controlling feedback to self, feedback to other SID on the board, feedback to SID on next board, external audio output, and master L and R outputs; and the mixer circuit for all the feedback inputs (and external input) to each SID. The boards are custom-manufactured. The total across all four boards: eighty ICs, 248 resistors, 224 capacitors, 24 transistors, and sixty connectors, for a total of 2600 soldered holes!
