  1. Hi, I've designed this PCB in KiCAD to hold 4x8 Omron B3W-9000 illuminated switches, as well as integrated DINX4 and DOUTX4. Price vary quite a bit depending on the distributor, but in the EU I found them at ~2€ each here. The quality seems really quite good, and you can insert a printed transparent label to indicate function. I've used completely separate lines for SI/SO, SC1/SC2 and RC1/RC2 as I understand this is the recommend way to reliably chain modules together in series, in order to not to mess up the timings. Can someone more knowledgeable than me please confirm this, and point out any potential mistakes before I send the files for production ? I'll put everything on github when I've built the pcb and confirmed everything works as intended.

    8xOLED PCB

Hi, I'm building a MCU type controller and I'm starting to design some PCB's for the various modules. I'm planning to share them here so other users can use them if they want, if that's ok. The first and simplest one is an 8xOLED carrier board to connect to J15A of the STM32F4 core. Initial tests on a breadboard with 2 screens work fine. It is my first time using Kicad and also designing a 2-layer board, so I'd like to get some feedback before sending them to the fab house. OLED's are 0.96'' SSD1306 4-wire SPI type Mechanically the OLED's are plugged into 1x7 sockets Each 'channel' is exactly 1.1 inch wide. It leaves a little wiggle room between the screens, and should allow the case too be quite compact I remember seeing another schematic with added 100nF decoupling caps, but they're not on Thorsten wiring diagram, so I'm wondering if I should add those NOTE: I'm going to extend the board to avoid having the holes running under the OLED's.
  3. Hi everybody, After spending my weekend on reading and brainstorming about the MBFM , I have some ideas i would like to share =) First , i will talk about the Pros and Cons of the MBFM "V2.1" on STM32F4 made by Sauraen and Evolution of Control Surfaces. By studying the way Sauraen worked about FM synthesis and especially in his try to make MBFM evolve, i learnt much. Pros : His Control Surface is visual , advanced and you have quite quick access to parameters when you understood the thing . Driven by the new CORE32 , much fonctionnalities are available. Cons : His Control Surface is Messy and unoptimized at first sight . By making the design on his way "too quickly" and without documenting "well", Community isn't aware of all this amazing work . PCB design is still "modular" Many may not understand, but i think the STM32F4 Core is kinda useless here. CORE8 (with PIC) is well know and understood by the community, and has made its proofs on the "Driving Synthesis OPL3" thing. Do we really need the "overpower" of a STM32F4 ? I think the new CORE32 is more designed to support "heavyweight" applications and UI like RGB BLM, Sequencer etc... Driving 2 OPL3 modules with 2 CORE8 sounds good enough to me. Lightweight is great =) Edit : Due to some good advices , now Really Considering using CORE32 in a second version base PCB , "horsepower" is sometimes useful =) MBSID has evolved with a Control Surface from Step A to C . I think the current MBFM (1.4) Control surface is like a "Step B" . With MB-6582 , Wilba made a full compact All-In-One version of the "Step C" surface of MBSID : Well Designed PCB in 2 parts (Base PCB and Control Surface), designed to fit in a small case, "costless" Components and DIY friendly , Easy Assembly. Everything you need to build the "sweet designed Synth" you ever dreamt of. I want to Build a full featured, nice to look and easy to use MBFM synth. I brainstormed a bit , and i thought that reusing Wilba design could be a start Based upon a screenshot of the frontpanel of the MB-6582 in frontpanel designer soft, i made a Control Surface Design "Step C" alike for the MBFM synth with some Photoshop copy/pastes. Then i opened the MB-6582 Base PCB and incorported good-sized OPL3 modules instead of the SIDs. I let you see. Some improvements could be made on the FrontPanel, like a shape for waveforms instead of numbers. But i think i didn't forgot too much. Waiting fo some advices before going further into that work =) Regards, JK
  4. Yo! See picture. Finally decided to part with a way-too-long-ongoing project. A little history about this piece of crap... I started this project many years ago. I was gonna have a SID synthesizer, and I was gonna have the best SID synthesizer. So I bought the sexy junk in the attached picture. Full of energy, I started to put this together. This was finally going to happen. But as it usually works - sometimes life takes some turns here and there that is not exactly planned for. Suddenly, there was kids. Then a larger old house (piece-of-shit) suddenly was mine - or rather the bank's :D hehe. Needless to say, this house was the perfect for me and my family. It was located in a very nice place, and needed a lot of renovation. Actually a lot of renovation can't really start to describe how much renovation it needed. So I created the Technobreath's Legendary Box Of Shame. This is where I put all the midibox projects (well mostly midibox projects). This is the box that was gonna look at me, one day, when I was finished working on the house renovation. It was gonna look at me from the shelf there with it's big strict eyes telling me to start pick stuff out of it and finish it. Yeah... As I don't respond well to threaths, the box has been sitting there - giving me the most evil eyes you can think of - and I have just given it the evil eye right back. So this is how it's gonna be. My face is getting wrinkled, and my hair is turning gray from all those evil looks I've been giving that box. Now - gray hair is something that I usually welcome - it's how it is. One gets older and older. And with the gray hair comes WISDOM! Which brings me to the damn point! I'm getting rid of this piece of shit. It's been nothing but trouble for me. It doesn't make me happy anymore. Hehe - to be a bit serious tho. I'm selling this also because my SID build has taken another direction. I no longer have any need for a CS like this. What you see in the picture is what you get. There is obviously NOT 2x PCBs. It's a picture of front and back so you can see what it looks like. It has been put together, and put in the box. Never been used or abused. The panels obviously need a bit cleaning (finger marks here and there which will wash away). But there are no scratches or any other dings in it that I can see. It is as u see. PCB has all components (iirc - so check it yourself) soldered. The PCB is bought from SmashTV's midibox shop back in the day. The panel kit is bought from julianf (which should really speak for itself when it comes to quality - this is professional stuff!) The encoders is bought from SmashTV. I have taken away the ball inside all of them except the menu encoder, so they are smooth - not clicky. All other components - LEDs, switches and the rest is noname brand bought off ebay. The only catch here, is that I have never had the chance to test it, as I never finished that build. The stuff is located in southern Norway, and I can ship to anyone who wants it. Obviously you need to pay for the shipping. This is not included in the price I want for it which is: 99 PayPal Euros! The way I came up with this price was like this. I took a look at the current prices for these items new. Then I took away one kadam to honor the midibox community, whos concept this is. :). This means, New price today, sliced that a bit off for good measure, never added the components to the cost - so they are free. Since it's never been used, even tho it's aged a bit, it has aged very nicely, so I think that's a fair way to do it, without totally killing julianf's panel sales. I also have a large box of knobs. I believe the 6582 originally was designed with the Waldorf knobs in mind. I have various colors, and I can throw in enough of those to make this even more complete if you are interested. I need a symbolic amount of money for those. TLDR: For sale. 99 euros. Can add waldorfs, paypal. Sold as is, untested. Buyer pays shipping and any other costs related to import. Drop me a message under here if you are interested in this piece of history. Well my history at least hehe. For ithat to be as transparent as possible, I will not accept PMs on this. It's only fair that everyone can see what's going on. First one that wants this will get it. After an agreement is reached, buyer will pay immediately. I have very low tolerance for BS. Shipping will be done only when full payment is in my paypal account, and it will be shipped within a couple of days after payment. If you by any chance feels that the price is to high - please - don't hesitate to make me an offer. I want this sinking stone gone! :).
  5. hey guys, i am planning on getting some midibox pcbs done, mostly cause i need them myself but i might just do a slightly bigger run and make them available to the community at cost. mostly i am looking to do a version of @Fairlightiii's rotary encoder / led ring board: http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=mb-lre8x2cs_rev4.6 4x2 encoders seems fine, as discussed here but i really want to do a 4x1 version instead, to keep it more modular for different configurations. now here's the thing. by now i got back into electronics enough that i can (barely) assemble the simpler ones of my diy kits. yeah i understand a resistor. but designing/altering a circuit would eat up way too much time for me. so here's my request: is there anybody anybody willing and able ont his board to help me change/reconstruct a proper 4x1 midibox-compliant pcb circuit based on this info? http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=mb-lre8x2cs_rev4.6 i am also thinking about getting the CORE and DIN/DOUT modules done, especially for easier EU availability. but those are somewhat available through modular addict so i am talking to him too to see what makes sense. based on the first cost estimeate i got from china i think i might want to produce the ENC/LED modules FULLY ASSEMBLED, with smd leds and all circuitry, but without the encoders. also in the end i will try to have them done in china and work with local EU producers instead, depending on the financial overhead of that. once i have the circuit design settled i will msot likey also start a bulk buy thing here.
  6. I have a few line driver PCB's left which a don't use. Included in the photo are the finished PCB's for reference. PCB's will be sold without components. A set (1 receiver PCB and 1 transmitter PCB) is €5. Shipping to most European countries is €4. If you're interested in buying a set let me know where you live and I can verify the shipping costs.
  7. Okay, my google fu is not up to par, and this is my first go at KiCad, but: I've been trying to find schematic files I can open in KiCad (i.e. not pdf's) for the Midibox modules. How do you all do this? I "think" it's possible to import the .brd files in KiCad, if I use the nightly build. Not sure what's an efficient work flow.
  8. I currently want to build the MIDIO 128 v3 (including the lpc17) so i managed to buy a lpxpresso1769. The components are easy to get, but i didnt find any way to get the PCB. Is there any way to buy a PCB online thats already made? oh, and does anyone know what the dimensions of the PCB are? i just found the datasheet including the Value 100 x 120, but im not sure about the unity. Greetings, Kilian
  9. Hello all, I am looking for the PCB for Wilba's front panel. Unfortunately, it is sold out in SmashTV's shop since summer already. Hence my questions: (1) Does anyone have a spare one I could buy? or (2) If other people are interested in getting one, and I somehow get the Gerber files, should I organise a group buy and have some produced? I am located in Germany :) Best wishes and a great start into the new year, Karg
  10. Hey I want to buy a gm5 1x1 pcb, kit or built! Doesn't matter. Link: http://www.ucapps.de/mbhp_usb_gm5.html I'm located in Denmark, let me know If you want to sell yours!

    EuroTPD.jpg

    From the album: EuroTPD v1.0

A screenshot of the newly created EuroTPD, a Track Position Display board better suited for Eurorack systems. It seems there was some interest in this.
  12. So, after much time ogling and reading up on Midibox projects, I finally decided to start going headfirst into it. Curious, though - has anyone used the Livid Instruments Builder series Omni RGB boards for their projects? Do they play nicely with DIN/DOUT/AIN/AOUT modules? These seem to be a solid source for building up a control surface, particularly because they're pre-populated with RGB LEDs and the same 10-pin headers that MBHP uses. EDIT: link to the aforementioned part: http://shop.lividinstruments.com/rgb-omni/
  13. Hi, As i said in an other message, my original plan was simply to put my old SID V1 back to life. I wanted to put it in a RACK 1U because i have too many little boxes everywhere around here. Very quickly i decided to upgrade the PIC and add a second SID to have a stereo V2. Then the project has grown. Here is the current status... The rack front panel (screenshot from front panel designer) : The knobs will be pots. I played a little with one pot on my mockup and it's very fun to control parameters with them. The 2 surface control PCBs : (They include the 74hc595 and 165 so they can directly be plugged on J8/J9 on core) And the most ambitious one : This is a Core + 2 SID on 10x10cm PCB + CAN (diode & resistor) + 4 mem chips. (With one jumper and 2 wires it's possible to use the 4 other 24LC512 of another PCB in adition to the main local 4.) One of the goal is to easily link up to 4 PCBs like this as SID v2 allows. I'll double check the PCBs and will order them. So there will be some time before the next update. I'll make all the files of this project available when it's finished. PCB are made with Kicad. Thanks Thorsten for documenting so well everthing, Xavier
  14. Hi, I'm in need of a DOUTx4 pcb, it needs to be the latest version which is R5 Thanks George
  15. Hi, I still have 6 naked MBHP CORE LPC17 V1.0 laying around here. (see photo's). I had ordered 10 pcb's and built 4 core modules. I gave away one and still have 3 here. That is more than enough for my experiments, I don't need more. So if anyone is interested in a few or all of them, let me know your address, and how many you want. I will send them to you for free (except postage cost - via paypal) Postage cost within Europe : 3.5 euro for 1 or 2 PCB's in a foam envelope (<100g) 7 euro for more PCB's together in a foam envelope (<350g) Grtz, Serge
  16. TK has already mentioned it in I have created a PCB for the MIDIbox Standard Control Surface (SCS) that does not require any shift registers and connects directly to J10A of the core board. The SCS module integrates nicely into the MIOS framework, check out tutorial #027 if you want to learn how to use this in your own project. Or just use it for a simple user interface in your MIDIBox CV V2. I have tried to accommodate footprints for a number of different switches: I succeeded with the Marquardt 6425 series, the ITT Schadow D6 series available at Reichelt, and the E-Switch 612-TL1100 series. That makes the board a pretty universally usable PCB, I believe. Also, it will align perfectly with a 20x2 character LCD, which should sit just above this PCB in the front panel. The bare PCB is about 98x49mm in size: Here are the different switches in place: A full documentation can be found in the Wiki. PM me if you need one of these boards for your project. Best, ilmenator
  17. Hello everyone, Anyone here knows of a PCB Fabrication who can order fast with low cost? My board is 4 layers and like to get it made in less than a week.
  18. The RGB LED matrix described here can be used to signal feedback to the user, as for example in my MIDI Matrix with 56 Inputs and 56 Outputs. But, it can also be used for fancy stuff, Vegas mode, bling, impressing your neighbours,… The PCB is as wide as the RGB LED modules themselves, with enough space above and below for mounting holes. This means that the modules can easily be chained horizontally in order to create type crawls. If you cut off the top and bottom mounting holes along the line that is printed on the PCB then you can also create larger screens extending in two dimensions. It consists of 4 DOUT shift registers (74HC595) that feed the RGB LED display module in a matrix style. It is connected to J8/J9 of the core board. In order to access the RGB LEDs, use the BLM-X module which makes it straightforward to access single colors / single LEDs in the matrix. A fully detailed description of the project can be found in the Wiki.
  19. Looking for a seqv4 pcb to complete my project. Anyone? I realize these are rare right now. i figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. ;)
  20. Hi all, as a by-product of my latest project, the MIDIbox Matrix (a MIDI router with up to 56 in- and out-ports), I have created a PCB for the Standard Control Surface or SCS. This little board assumes that you are using a 2x24 character LCD and 4 items per menu page. This is slightly more character space per menu entry than what TK is using, however the code is fully configurable to handle this. Personally, I find the 5 available characters per menu item much more comfortable and less cryptic than lower character counts. Assuming that you want to use both shift and exit buttons for navigating the menus, the board is prepared for one extra button to the left of the display. Also, two additional encoders (with push function) can be used - but these can also be left out, obviously! Specs of the PCB are documented in the WIKI. I have 4 of these available, but would be willing to order more if there is enough interest. Asking price is 13€ per board, plus shipping costs. Drop me a PM or answer in this thread if interested. Best, ilmenator
