I knew I'd kept some 8910's for synth making from my days repairing arcade machines. I set out on an expedition into the back of my storage cupboards tonight, and finally found the big box of old chips. Wow! I did keep some weird stuff. All flavours of Z80, 6510's, 286 flat packs, about 50 6116 2K RAM chips, what seems like a tin of every EPROM ever made, (really: I found 2 1702's), and finally the sound chips. I found 7 AY8910's so far, marked 'pulls from working boards', and a couple of 8912's. I've put some on the fleamarket, since I won't need them all.

Oh, and if anyone needs any other odd chips, drop me a memo, I might just have them, for instance if you have a pressing need for some MBM93419 64x9 bit bipolar static RAM - for your 1970's supercomputer or logic analyser, I have at least 10 of them!

the demo is great! I am a midibox and PIC noob, but i am currently working on both this and 2 mono sid boxes (one for each chip type) and I have some experience with chiptune, circuit bending and arduinos. I'm very glad to see the C64 keyboard has gone that is what has been holding me back on completing the project.

Could you please clarify the functions of the various sections. so you have three square wave oscillators, are these played on three separate midi channels? Can the envelope shape can be applied to only one channel at a time, and only one shape is selectable at a time? Also please explain the FX tab and optional functions section. You see I am wanting to limit its size as much as possible, I want the sound of the ZX spectrum without the bulk or having to spend ages loading temperamental tapes into it.

Thanks in advance

Hello Analog Monster,

so you have three square wave oscillators, are these played on three separate midi channels?

You can assign each square wave to every MIDI Channel (1-16) you want to.

Just have a look at the LCD MENU 6 => http://www.subfrequenz.net/midibox/mbayv2/MBAY2MenueLCD.pdf

Can the envelope shape can be applied to only one channel at a time, and only one shape is selectable at a time?

Yes, it's the limitation of the AY (YM) Chip. There is only one envelope shape at a time.

But the envelope shape can be applied to one, two or all three square wave oscillators.

See LCD MENU 5.

The FX Tab:

⇒ see LCD MENU 8:

[Fx POS ] ⇒ FX POSition (the Fx tab allow 32 (POS 0-31) entries)

[Fx DELAY ] ⇒ Adjust the Fx execution timer: Wait 0-200 timer cycles

[Fx (NAME)] ⇒ Adjust the Fx FUNCTION NAME here (see LCD MENU 8 :: FX FUCTION NAMES)

[Fx PARAM] ⇒ Optional Fx Function PARAMETER

Fx execution work flow:

Hello Analog Monster,

I have realized I definitely want the FX section as with a little patience I should just about be able to program some kick and snare sounds.

:)

Just a hint: You will need all buttons - for it's not possible to use all MBAY(YM)V2 options just with the Value/Item/Menu Buttons.

hi mrspring,

wow 33 AY chips! :)

are the chips from microchip?

i ask because some of them (AY38912A/P, AY38910A/P) have no noise - just tone abc.

no problems with:

GI AY38912 CDA, Yamaha YM2149F (let me know if you have successfully tested other chip devices!)...
