Where do the bridges go on the v4 core board

Is it a two-layer board with green soldermask? Then no bridges are required.
If it is a single-layer board, find the "quickview" or .brd file on uCapps. Probably the red wires represent the top bridges, with blue as the bottom layer already patterned on the copper side.

Feel free to post a picture of your board here to check.

ok I have had to use google drive for the pictures as this site gave me an error for uploading the pictures. The board I guess is version 4 double sided and it says CORE_R4D on it, are any bridges needed for this board? If so where do they go? also on the first picture what are those 5 holes near the bottom of the pic for, I have put a resistor bridge between 2 of them so I will have to take it out, what are the holes for? do any bridges go there? if so how do they connect? Many thanks for your invaluable help, alistair.

Hi Alistair,

Generally I would only populate parts where there is a silkscreen indicator. This is certainly a double-sided board and the Core is quite a basic circuit, so you won't need any jumpers I am 99% sure. All pin headers seem to be indicated with a J prefix.

Any plated holes that don't have a corresponding silkscreen mark are probably vias that join the top and bottom copper planes. You will probably be able to see the copper tracks leading to the vias from the difference in colour. Or if there is no track, the via connects to a 0V/ground plane But yes, it is harder to make out with black solder mask!

If you are unsure, put your multimeter in continuity test mode (or resistance) and check the electrical connections.

No jumpers on my R4C and R4D pic based core layouts.  My PCB layouts usually have an "R" designation to avoid confusion vs. the official layouts that usually had a "V" designation.

Andy is correct, except the ones John produces (modular addict shop) are black silkscreen, and the ones from my shop (midibox-shop.com) were green silkscreen. 

John's also have some very slight differences with silkscreen (lot code for the pcb fabricator and UL 94 declaration) and soldermask (blind vias vs. exposed vias) but everything else is the same.

We used to call this one the "Core8", but in the years since it is more commonly referred to as "PIC Core".

Also if you are building a SID you will need to terminate the CAN bus with a 1k resistor and a diode or it will likely either reset at random or get stuck in a boot loop.  Plenty of info on that change here in the forum posted years ago.
