Here is the way this plays out in the US: The IP rights holder brings an infringement case against the people/company in question, and presents evidence showing their code or specific features within the product in question. Then it's up to the defendant to prove that it was a "clean room" process, meaning that no confidential or trade-secret type information was derived from any other source than the original product itslef. A clean reverse creates documentation at every step so it's easy to prove. Do a search for the history of PC BIOS for more info.... Absolutely! But if you sell (or with the newer laws simply re-distribute) anything but a proven clean reverse then you are breaking the law. Again this is only a US perspective, in other countries the laws are different. How does this relate to the MIDIbox? Some of the old school sound chips documentation is considered a trade secret or protected by an NDA or confidential. The only smart reason for this is to control development insuring only approved developers are using these chips. So even though we can get all needed dev info and datasheets, we can't legally re-distribute any of that info so proper documentation of a new use of the chip would be impossible. There are enough cool sound chips out there with public docs to keep us all busy for a looooong time......but we should avoid the ones that don't in case someone wants to make a stink in the future. Heya MSI! It's not only possible but rather easy....... This pdf schematic (from the MIDIO128 ) shows how. Please post some pictures when you are done, I know there are more guitarists that need inspiration to do this. ;D Just yell if you run into issues. Have fun! Smash

Best info I could find is here. Some interesting work there, has source code for using a PIC as a mouse replacement sending ps/2...... Best! Smash

hehe sorry for almost derailing the topic! This is a huge assumption on my part (until I dig up a modern pad to tear up), but don't most touch pads have two variable resistance lines that could be properly scaled and read by an AIN? I know I have de-constructed at least one that worked that way (4 wires, 2 ground 1X, 1Y)......Am I remembering all the way back to the C64 Koalapads on this? Best! Smash

There are so many junk patents here that you can't create anything without infringement. In the past it was not possible to patent an idea that is an obvious extension of existing technology. That's not the case these days! Using a force-feedback controller for mixing/controlling audio is an extension of existing technology, and last time I checked Atari had all the patents relating to force feedback controls. (they did pioneer this technology, spent the R&D money to figure out what works, etc.) So with industry knowledge of Atari's patents on motorized joysticks, any patents that are issued for the -use- of that core technology are junk patents, not in the spirit of protecting IP but to force other companies not to use existing technologies in a competing product. Then you have the Chinese and other fresh industrial countries who could not grow thier economy correctly without ignoring IP rights. More power to them. They steal a lot of IP, but a lot of the IP that they steal is not rightfully patented anyway! Here in the US some of my light fixture and control designs infringe many junk patents, but yet my designs are unique enough to be granted thier own patents. That's a huge problem.... A perfect example is Color Kinetic's patent on using LED's for color mixing. CK did not invent any diode, or RGB LED's, but they have a patent on using LED's for color mixing in -any- application. Lighting people have been mixing primary colors since the dawn of theatre, with dyes for color filters in front of flame lamps way before electricity. Why should one company be allowed to keep a patent on something that is a suggested use of an off-the-shelf component/technology, when they contributed nothing to the technology or furthering the art? Only one possible answer: To eliminate competition. In some countries the patent system is paid for by taxpayers, so when talking with your elected officials let them know that you don't like funding large (profiteering) companies' ability to eliminate competition. My solution: Ship fixtures to another country with more reasonable IP laws, slap a "made in xxx" decal on them, then import them knowing that CK and the other would be competition killers don't want to sue me where my product is not infringing a patent........ I know that sounds a bit anti-American to replace "made in USA" with "made in xxx", but it was only assembled here, as with all electronics these days the components come from everywhere but the US. Sorry for more than two cents on this one.....been holding in that rant for a while. ;) To the console manufacturer afraid of Harrison: Build it, Pay license fees to the people who own the core technology patents (Atari, Microsoft, whoever) and if they (Harrison) sues, produce the relevant patents on the core technology itself, and Harrison will lose in court because their patent is based on an obvious intended use of existing technology, not a true innovation. I agree with both posts above...I need to figure out how to put this on the wiki so we can all work on it.... ;D Best! Smash

There is an unusual developer environment for palm (and other targets including PIC mcu's) called xpad. Works like Max or PD with the concept of state machine programming and uses a drag & drop flowchart style - not lines of code - to write apps. Check out this old thread for more: http://www.midibox.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=concepts;action=display;num=1099078528;start=1#1 Best! Smash

Whoop I had not thought about that......These are just graphics I made with Photoshop and Eagle and images found from a google images search in a half-hour flurry of work on this......I drew the waveforms in Photoshop....;) If the concept is worth further work I'll make sure the scale(s) are marked and right on the final. Heya! I made up a little web page to illustrate the CORE power supply, check it out at http://www.avishowtech.com/mbhp/ps/ and let me know what you think. This is a bit of tinkering to see if we can make this easy for total beginners, and all feedback from everyone is appreciated. If it is the most stupid thing you have ever seen, or if its a workable direction and needs finished/done better please let me know your thoughts...... ;D Best! Smash <edit: corrected outdated URL>

Very cool that it's working (aside from the java upload), and nice work on the box! Inline tags on from here on the forum also work to the gallery, but not to/from external sites: is just [img=http://www.avishowtech.com/albums/Rowan/Inside_full1lowres.jpg] Best! Smash

No worries, thanks for helping me get this working..... The java applet worked when I first tested it many moons ago with 10.2.8, I'll check it again and lose just the java app if it does not work well with the default OSX install. I just tinkered with the settings a bit more, and the permissions for creating a sub album in the build section were wrong. I also changed the settings for the main gallery to only allow new galleries to be created in the build section. Your difficulty with this is my fault, I did not have the setup correct. I thought I did, but I have learned I need to be more carefull with testing in the future......My apologies! Please let me know if it does not play friendly now, I'll sweep up a bit and hopefully it will work as it should for you! Smash

I'll do my best to hold in the rant about how he was murdered on stage. You meet a lot of people running sound, I crossed DD's path many times over the years. My thoughts and prayers to the Abbott family.....

Hi Rowan! Sorry about the issues it is giving you. I had no idea it was giving this problem. I did find an album you created there, it was set as hidden, had no photos. Did it give you issues trying to upload also, or did it never show you the album you created? I did change settings that effect all of this, so it works for me now (using a regular user login) but I know that's not proof.... ;) Please try again on the mac, as a mac user myself it's important to me to -not- have yet another site that is problematic on a mac but ok on a PC. It's a pain to test on multiple platforms for anyone building a page, and we would be fine if the Wintendoâ„¢ boys had not skewed (or completely ignored) the standards that were in place when developing IE (Internet Exploderâ„¢). For those with form/display issues on some sites with safari, You might try mozilla, it really is the hot rod of the current crop of browsers. I thought safari was great until I ran mozilla..... If it does not work fine for you this time please let me know, It's important to me to know this is working. ;D Best! Smash

Yes No, but all of my layouts use 4.1mm. Yes, you are correct. Check out the catalog page for a dimensional drawing. Best! ;D SmashTV

Hey all! I find it mildly amusing and quite annoying that buyers from France at my store can read and understand everything but the shipping options, out of the last 40 orders to France 24 wanted PCB only (flat mailer) shipping for thier kit/parts orders. :-/ I'm very afraid of the "engrish" that the babel fish translator speaks, so if anyone could help me with these translations I would appreciate it: Kits and or 9+ PCBs = Kits et ou 9+ PCBs PCBs only, 8 or less = PCBs seulement, 8 ou moins BTW: I really did not take French in high school, I would like to think that I would not have slept through it.........like I did English and grammar! ;D Laissez les bons temps rouler! I know this one! ;D 4.1mm It's just a touch smaller than 3/16" in imperial measure. Best! Smash

hahahaha that's great! ;D The cosmic blaster reference is from my tech days, where when we found bad soldering it was either done with a cosmic blaster 4000w space iron or by a group of poorly trained former circus monkeys in a factory in China. Apparently some of the monkeys escaped and made it to the US, because I have repaired pinball machines where people attempted to solder with a cig lighter! Not even the crackpipe/jet lighter kind! I can't imagine trying to explain "while I was trying to repair it, I decided it would be a good idea to get my lighter out and hold a flame up to it" to someone else after something else gets charred also. A side note on the weller gun type irons, the big ones throw enough magnetism to correct the purity of a picture tube or erase magnetic recording tape. I used to carry one in the route truck just for last minute monitor purity/color correction, instead of my expensive pro degaus coil. ;D Best! Smash

Hehe..... :D I felt the shift in the force as I watched the lights dim......Someone, somewhere has deployed a "cosmic blaster" class soldering tool......:o Solder mask is a wonderful thing..... ;D </teasing> Best! Smash

This terminology comes from long ago, numerous cave paintings indicate the origin as a European standards group. V obviously stands for voltage, D = drain, S = source, C = collector, E = emitter The double letter is/was used to note supply voltage, so where Vs and Vd are to denote these connections or values on an individual part, Vss and Vdd indicate the supply voltage. All of this is a throwback to the caveman days of electronics, and in modern practice Vss is ground, Vdd is the positive rail. The Vo thing -I think- is actually everyone trying to say V0 (that's V zero not "O"), and for most circuits this is the ground rail of the power supply. This makes things easier to comprehend on circuits with multiple voltages and negative rails. This explanation of V0 is pure speculation on my part, if anyone knows the whole story please share....... Hopefully this history as I have heard it is correct, all this is from way before my time. ;D Best! Smash
