generally, i try not to get too heated about issues on this board, but i feel very strongly about this issue. i think smash's thoughts sum up what i've been trying to say perfectly (and i think your analogy works well, smash). therefore, i'll try to refrain from writing any more rampant posts in this thread. sorry if i've made anyone angry.

How can you call yourself "DIY"ers if you can't respect anotherones work.
you're missing the point completely. how is anyone disrespecting his work? he's making money off of thorsten's designs...isn't that disrespecting thorsten's work?
If jamram made a midibox out of nearly nothing, that's really a "handcrafted" piece of DIY.
Do you really want to say 140 Euros is a COMMERCIAL amount for some hours of etching, soldering and construction + parts?

only in the sense that the seller would be able to offer personal support as opposed to the buyer coming here for support. other than that, there's not much difference, really.

what an obnoxious thing to say. as far as i can see, people have responded in a VERY thoughtful way on this matter. instead, YOU are the one making broad insults against anyone who doesn't share your view. thanks, martin.

I don't understand the endless discussions. If somebody wants to sell selfmade equipment in Ebay or whereever, why not? There is no real damage for anybody, nobody is hurt etc. And it's clearly in the decision of the person selling the equipment how to setup the price level. The only thing one should pay attention is the story not to violate trademarks. But this is not the case here, so what? BUT: It starts getting interesting if somebody copies 1:1 the MIDIbox boards and sells them professionally as his own work, not mentioning the MIDIbox source respectively the owner ship of TK. This won't be funny anymore.
I think we have other problems in the world to solve... :)

so you have no problem with me building a box and selling it on ebay for 3 times the price? :o i'll tell you why that would be wrong:
thorsten is responsible for ALL of this. without thorsten, there would be no midibox. he charges nothing for it, so why should we? frankly, any motion to sell midibox stuff on ebay is downright offensive. it's a total slap in the face to thorsten and everyone else who chooses NOT to profit off of THORSTEN'S hard work. do you realize what you're suggesting? you're condoning stealing thorsten's ideas and profiting off of his hard work. THINK about what you're saying, man.
i'm sorry to get so heated about this...no hard feelings, but i simply CANNOT believe what i'm hearing! >:(

well said, moebius. things seem to be settling down now, so i don't want to rip this whole thing open again, but i wanted to express a few unbiased observations:
1. to follow up on moebius' most recent post, SmashTV does NOT make any significant profits on the stuff he sells. i know you've already tried to say this, moebius, but i thought i'd lay it out there in plain english for anyone who doesn't understand. for someone to accuse smash of profiteering on midibox stuff is completely ignorant...he simply enables people to be more productive.
2. i agree that people are coming down too hard on jamram...making an example of him. while i do think that what he did was wrong (and i think he knew that to begin with, but oh well), he's clearly sorry about offending anyone.
3. jamram, you say that all you wanted was to make back the money you spent on parts. While I understand that sentiment, your actions seem to be much more dishonest than that. I'll explain what I mean.... I don't know exactly how much your sid box cost you to put together, but my single sid with minimum control surface (40x2 lcd) cost about $60 (46.4376 EUR) for everything (sid included). For the sake of argument, I'll be generous and say that your box maybe cost around 70euros ($90.4439 ) to build. If you truly were only hoping to break even, you could have set a "Buy It Now" price on ebay for 70euros. Instead, you let people bid and made 140.40euros ($181.405)!! That's DOUBLE your money (THREE TIMES what I paid for mine). So, you made quite a profit....which *seems* to be part of the motivation...which youu're not really owning up to. I agree that we should all try to move on from this, but I wanted to point that out as one reason why some people are particularly upset about all of this. Yes, the auction is over, you've made your money, so there's no point in dwelling on this matter indefinitely. However, it is very important to acknowledge that you've opened up a real "can of worms" here. I know better than to sell my midiboxes on eBay, but if someone else now sees that he can potentially make up to THREE TIMES what he paid by selling on eBay, it's going to take a very strong will to deter him.
in short, i accept your apology, but i think that your "stop yelling at me, i can't change what i've done" attitude is a bit smug and evasive.
feel free (anyone) to comment on these thoughts.

ok, first off, you have to stop posting all of your posts in this section of the forum. there is a section that is clearly marked "testing/troubleshooting"....that is where this type of post should go (along with your other posts). also, rather than start a new thread for this question, you should continue with your previous thread ("what next"). there are a few reasons for this:
1. people are already familiar with your situation, so dialogue is more fluid.
2. a consistent thread that shows your progress from start to finish will be much more helpful for people who may encounter your problem in the future.
3. the forum will be much less cluttered.

when you upload the app, what kind of acknowledgement string are you getting back?
the following information is from http://www.ucapps.de/mios_bootstrap.html:
After the upload of every 1k block an acknowledge string will be sent by the loader - Action ID "0f" for ok, "0e " on errors. An error ID "0e 03" means: wrong checksum, "0e 04" means: write failed (data mismatch during verify); "0e 05" means: "memory area protected". The last error ID appears when you tried to overwrite the loader, or in case that the code is uploaded with the secondary loader, that you tried to overwrite the operating system.that's a start. let us know what you find out.

TK has written software for the MBSid so that it emulates a Roland TB-303. (thats it a bit explained globally). It also discusses about adding external filters to your MBSid since the mp3's posted use external filters for fattening up the sound.

oh ok, i think i see what you mean now. as far as i know, all you can do with only a sid module is test the voltages coming from certain pins (per the instructions at the bottom of the sid module page). other than that, i don't think you can do much without a core module.

fully assembled, my core board from smash is exactly 3cm tall (including solder mounds on bottom) x 8.2cm x 6.4cm.
my din boards (and probably dout boards too) are 1.3cm tall (including solder mounds on bottom) x 10cm x 4.5cm (of course, height may vary depending on how you're connecting to the jumpers....headers, etc.)
probably should've left this one for smash himself to answer, but oh well...

P.S. smash, this makes me realize that this info would probably be useful to have on your site. i know the board layouts might have the info embedded in the files, but might as well put it on the info pages also (so people wouldn't have to download anything.

thanks again for the help. my midio128 is simply sending midi notes at this point, so the code is pretty much untouched (i.e. what's in the zip that i downloaded from ucapps.de). if you do have a chance to take a crack at it, that would be great. if not, i understand completely and thanks again for your help! :)

thanks so much for your reply. first off, congratulations on the new house/lab/equipment....i'm sure it's gonna be a lot of fun! anyway, haven't had much of a chance to solve this one on my own yet, but i'm hoping to be able to get it working before next tuesday (when the project is due). per your recommendation, i'll take a look at the mb64 code/register idea. i've also been browsing the sample apps which might hold the key. in the meantime, no one else has any ideas?! :'(

turns out it uses negative voltage...when i connect it to the core i get 2 rows of blocks...
as far as i know, you shouldn't be getting those blocks if you need a negative voltage. i have a negative voltage lcd and the blocks don't appear without a negative voltage.

one last question:
is it possible to implement inc/dec encoders into the midio128 design? basically, i'd like to add an encoder that would increase or decrease the value of the pulse width or transposition on my sid synth. i know a thorough study of the mios language would probably solve my question, but i'm hoping to finish this project for an installation in the near future. i'm guessing this wouldn't be too difficult, but i'm not quite sure where to start. if someone could give me a few quick tips in response to this question (and the above question) it would be GREATLY appreciated. i hope to get started on some serious (and self-taught ;)) mios coding this summer when i finish school.

ok, so i've got everything working pretty much, but it turns out that i need to also control a relay for part of the project. i can't seem to get it to work, however. i took a look at this post: http://69.56.171.55/~midibox/forum/index.php?topic=3413.0, but the link to the thread with the answer doesn't work (post server move...). here's a few quick details for people who have a minute to help me out:
-DIN pins 1-20 are switches that send midi notes (this works perfectly)
-DIN pin 21 is a capacitive touch switch that i want to use to toggle the relay. i know that the switch works, but i don't know how to get it to toggle the relay.
-the relay is a 5v microrelay that i'm driving with a uln2003 chip.
do i need to used both the midio128 AND the relay sysex files? i've tried configuring pin 21 to send the C0 00 signal to trigger the DOUT pin 1, but it doesn't seem to work. assuming everything is wired correctly, what needs to be changed in the sysex file(s)?

yeah, i would say that a commercial product like tin-it is the way to go. i've never used it myself, but there are other products on the market just like it i'm sure. besides, i really think that tinning the traces with solder would be too tedious and uneven. as far as i know, with the commercial products, you just submerge the board in a solution for 5 minutes and it's done (and looks professional)! i think you can even save and reuse the solution when you're done.

Although, a small, palm sized, battery operated LED projector was just released... it can throw a 40" image from a little more than a foot away...
man, that thing sounds amazing! how much does it cost? i want one....
