  1. Hi,

Last night i tried to upload the DIN interconnection test and something weird happened. It showed me an error and the LCD came up with bars along the top row.

I tried to upload the test again and nothing, so i tried to upload the main.hex from the MIDIbox SID file. This did not work either and MIOS studio showed a message saying something like "MIOS is already loaded".

Anyway, i left it for a night and tried again a minute ago. This time it was fine and i re-loaded the main.hex file.

The problem is that my buttons are still not working, Could it mean that there is a short somewhere and that is why i had the strange behaviour from it?

    Thank you

    Chris

  2. Hi all,

I made my MIDIbox SID as a university project and now i have to do a write up about it (not that it is finished). Anyway, i was wondering whether anyone had some sort of diagram showing how MIOS interacts with the PIC?

Also any other diagrams of stuff would be much appreciated (I need to fill up more space)!

    Thank you

    Chris

  3. the fact that the non-working ones are all on one side (and the other side works) might mean you're connecting those components through the the ground (Vs) pin on J4, but that pin isn't connected to ground at all.

Yes i've connected J4 VS to the rotary encoder and to the menu button and button 5. Is this not correct? It shows this on the 2x20enc.pdf.

Should i connect them to the VS on J3?

  4. Hi,

For some reason, the menu button, button 5, and the rotary encoder does not work on my MIDIbox SID. All the connections are correct and i've swapped around the 74HC165's a couple of times but no luck.

Is there anything else it could be?

Another thing, i've connected J1 of the the DIN to J9 of the core with ribbon cable and a double row IDC connector so J8 is going to the second row of J1 on the DIN. Could this be why?

    Thank you

    Chris

  5. Hi all,

So i finally got the first sound out of my MIDIbox SID! Thanks to Tim for all your help.

I still have a couple of questions though.

I want to add a contrast pot to the synth and i'm not sure how to do it. Do i just remove the trimmer pots on the CORE and replace them for some pots which i can fix to the box? If so, what value are they?

Also, i'm using a 2x20 LCD screen from SmashTV and wondered what the four holes on the right hand side are for?

    Thank you

    Chris

  6. Current drain of 0 doesn't sound correct. To measure it, you have to remove one supply cable (e.g. the 5V connection), and you have to place the multimeter in between the break.

You should measure ca. 7.5 mA w/o the PIC, and ca. 25 mA with the PIC. During code upload, you will measure short peaks of ca. 30 mA

    Hi,

So, i got a new CORE module from SmashTV and i've built it up.

I checked my PSU again and i'm getting 5.15v and 14.18v.

The first thing i tested was the current from the 5v of the PSU to vd of the CORE and i'm still getting 0mA. So i'm guessing that it's something to do with my PSU? Does anybody know what it could be?

    Thank you

    Chris

  7. So, you are using the optimized C64 PSU circuit? Did you connect the 5V at J2 or J1 (J2 would be the right one here, and note that the 7805 has to be removed in this case!)

    Best Regards, Thorsten.

Yep the optimized PSU and j2 and the 7805 has been removed and the holes bridged.

I wasn't measuring the current correctly before, but i snipped the +5v cable and measured the break and still 0mA.

  8. Hi,

Now i've changed both resistors 9 and 10. I'm now getting 4v in pin 20 so i thought i'd try uploading MIOS again. This time i got a different set of errors:

    Starting upload of mios_v1_9c_pic18f452.hex

Hex file contains code in MIOS range, forcing reboot!

Looks to me like it almost worked, does anyone know what could be wrong now? Is it still to do with pin 20? TK?

edit: i've just realised that i sometimes get 4v from pin 20 and sometimes it's 1.7v!

    Thank you

    Chris

  9. Thanks for the reply.

I do not seem to be getting 5v from pins 20(0.3v) ad 26(1.3v) of IC1 when the SID and CORE are connected. When they are not i get 5v from pin 20.

Could this be why? How can i fix it?

    Another question:

When turned on my boards sometimes make a sizzling sound, is this anything to worry about?

    Thank you

    Chris

I'm using a preloaded PIC from SmashTV and am trying to upload the "mios_v1_9c_pic18f452.hex" file.

I've seen that Toneburst has the same problem but he had a different error with the same file, i think that he solved the problem by getting a new optocoupler. Will i also need to do that?

    Thank you

    Chris

  11. Hi,

I've sorted the PSU and am getting the 14v and 5v needed but my CORE and SID are not showing the right voltages.

The CORE module shows the following:-

    IC1:MCLR(1) - IC1:Vss(12) = 5.16v

    IC1:Vdd(11) - IC1:Vss(12) = 5.16v

    IC1:Vdd(32) - IC1:Vss(31) = 0.06v ?????

    IC2(8 ) - IC2:(5) = 5.18v

The SID module shows the following:-

    IC1:Vcc(25) - IC1:Vss(14) = 0.70v  ?????

    IC2:Vdd(16) - IC2:Vss(8 ) = 2.55v  ?????

    IC3:Vdd(16) - IC3:Vss(8 ) = 3.58v  ?????

    What should i do?

Also there is a kind of crackle noise (like flux melting) when it's turned on, what could this be?

    Thank you

    Chris

  12. So i got my new c64 psu (finally) but i've got another problem  :'(

The 5v output is now reading 3.30v

and the 14 is reading 12.30v

Does anybody have any ideas what might be wrong with my psu board? I'm guessing that a component(s) broke when i wired it up to the SID and CORE?
