  1. I bought some as well, even with post to the UK they seemed a deal.

    They are definitely 24 'clicks' per rev. though I hadn't fired one up yet.

    I've just had one hitched up to my old Racal counter/timer. I did a 'gold standard' with a Bournes ECW 1J, and I easily read 24PPR. Then I tried the ones from Mr 'gmtcruiser'. They seem to have problems - they produce random counts as if they have very very noisy contacts. The Racal has a reasonable level of deadband available, but only on channel 'B', so I can't debounce the cheap encoders.

    I'll have to try them as an outboard and test in the near future, but for now I'd recommend trying a longer debounce time.

    Oh, and the switch common is one of the outside pins, not the centre as in the Bournes ones.

    I'll report more when I've done some tests.

  2. Nice work playing with deadbeat, i saw him play about 5 times when he came to melbourne a few months ago, he's awesome. Nice guy too.

    I'm in a similar situation, I have a gig this thursday playing with swayzak, who were a really big influence on me when i was starting to produce. I've been trying to finish my midibox before that gig, but there's no hope now, luckily i have other midi gear i can use.

  3. yeah the main volume knobs are a bit big, but i don't think it'll be too much of a problem. The main reason i've used those knobs is they were really cheap, 30c each.(about USD25c)

    i'm getting closer to getting it working, I think my ain boards are dodgy. Probably because i etched them myself.  ::)

  4. No, the 4051s shouldn't be so sensitive - many geeks never use sockets for these chips.

    Do you see the same random CC events when no AIN module is connected, and all analog inputs at J5 are clamped to ground?

    What happens, when only one multipexed channel for 8 pots is connected to the first analog input of J5, and the others are connected to ground? (for this test, the 4051s have to be supplied with Vss/Vdd, and the 3 select lines have to be connected to J6 of the core module)

    OK, so with no ain connected i get no random messages.

    with 1 channel channel of 8 pots is connected i get the random cc events.

    I guess this means that there my core is fine and there is something wrong with my ain board, or the wiring of my pots.

    I wired the pots exactly the same as the 64pots diagram on ucapps.de. I checked them again and they seem fine.

    All these random cc messages mean an open connection somewhere in the circuit right?

  5. ok i started troubleshooting by unplugging all the modules and adding them one by one.

    I got the dins to work ok, but there is a problem with the ain modules i keep getting random control messages

    All of the unused inputs are clamped to earth and all of the pots seem to be wired correctly. What should i try next?

    The ain boards i etched myself and they are a little rough, but there are no faults i can see. The only thing i can think of is: I soldered the 4051s directly to the board, are these chips particularly heat sensitive?

  6. OK, so things are coming along.

    I've ditched the button matrix idea and will be replacing them with a 4x4 button encoder matrix with multicolour leds. But in the mean time I have been trying to get it working without the matrix.

    I've uploaded mios and 64e firmware, but am having some troubles getting any midi output.

    Anyway a couple of more pics including the new stronger case i found for it:

  7. So, I've finished building the hardware and have uploaded mios and MB64e to my controller. Specs are:

    26 buttons

    7 encoders

    40 pots

    no display

    But when i open the mios studio midi monitor i get no midi coming out of my box at all, only the mios update request. I have also tried the midibox64 application and still no midi data.

    I figured it would need some extra configuration, but i get absolutely nothing from any of the buttons, pots or encoders.

    I have triple-checked all my connections and they all seem fine. Where do I go from here?

  8. I'm thinking of maybe having a small redesign. I was thinking of using the 4 buttons on top of the matrix to toggle between different setups, but i might add extra buttons for this

    I have an encoder for each channel, these will be assigned to control insert fx parameters on specific to each channel.

    I'm thinking of adding a multi colour led and a small button to switch between the parameters of the encoder. The led will show a specific colour for each parameter. So this brings me to a question:

    Is it possible in the midibox 64e firmware to toggle through individual encoder assignments, or am i limited to toggling complete snapshots?

  9. If you look around you can find flightcases that open like a suitcase, and have even depth on both sides. It'd be easy to use one of these to install a Midibox seq in one half and a midibox sid in the other.

    You'd have to recess the face panels so the knobs don't hit eachother, but that wouldn't be too hard.

    They're cheap secondhand too.

  10. Yeah it took a while to file them down. Other screws might look better, but I am focussing on functionality more than looks.

    Anyone know where i can different knobs for the joysticks? the ones that came with them are to short to gice good control.

  11. not yet i'm still on 5. i'll upgrade soon though.

    some more pics, this is how i'm doing backlit buttons.

    10mm leds with the top sanded flat, glued to the top of tact switches. It looks a bit dodgy but it's actually really sturdy and looks like it will work fine.

    i need a new camera.

  12. I started building this ages ago to play live with ableton, my other midi controller(UC33) is on it's last legs, and i was never really happy with it anyway.

    I had a big break from building but have decided to finish it off.

    Basically it's setup like a 6 channel mixer with 3 band eqs, 2 sends, 1 mute button, 1 launch button, and 1 encoder per channel. It also has 4 joysticks to control fx, and a rather dodgy monome ripoff, which i'm not 100% sure will work yet. If it doesn't i'll just add more encoders instead.

    I am a student, so i've been trying to do this on the cheap. I'm pretty pleased with how it's coming along. The only thing that i've screwed up so far is the drilling of the front panel isn't as square as it could be.

    Anyway here's some pics.
