Dear Collective Wisdom, I am looking to get a SID module going. I've read somewhere that the commodore 64 had the chip. My question is thus: did all commodores 64 had them? I see a Commodore 64c, Commodore "Drean" a Commoder Keyboard. Chip on the keyboard? Thanks! MG

Did you turn the other port (contrast) so that you can see anything? (Without backlight of course). Yes. Still a blank screen. If your PSU delivers more than 500mA you should check the board around the Backlight circuit for any short or soldering problem. Check the LCD board or the core?

I see now that I have what is described as a LCD type#0. Should have read more before asking about the controller. Anyway, still not working. Have tripled checked the wiring and I am almost 100% sure I have mios running on the PIC. Thanks for your HEEEEEELPPPPPP!

I tried disconnecting the backlight and it did change the scenario! I now have one upload request message :D. Voltage issues, as you rightly said. Still nothing on the LCD, though. I should be able to see characters, right? A "Ready" message as I could summon from my readings, right? Could it be that my LCD has an incompatible controller? I'm using a Winstar WH1602A 16x2 "Built-In Controller HD44780 (Hitachi) or equivalent"

Ok. So, finally had the time to test properly. I feel like I am making advances. However: 1- MIDI configurations were ok. But I'm still very confused. That's because in trying to deal with my LCD problems I noticed that moving the core's potentiometers (P1/P2) I changed the speed with which the upload request showed up in MIDI IN. I played with them until I got the messages at a interval of 2 seconds. 2-After getting the upload message every 2 seconds I uploaded MIOS without error messages ;D. Following, I used sysEx box to upload the Midibox64E application. Again, no error was listed. ::) 3-LCD, however, is still not working :P I am using a winstar 16x2. Model is listed as WH1602A. Cable was checked and the specifications speak of a "Built-In Controller HD44780 (Hitachi) or equivalent" Is it incompatible with MIDIBOX, somehow? Thanks for your always cogent replies!!!

by feedback you mean that a device has in and out connected? (I am mainly using mios studio, but do get the same super fast message in midiox).

Dear collective wisdom, I finally got around building a core with smash tv´s core r4 and his pre-programmed PIC with bootstrap loader 1.2 and mios 1.9. I also have the latest mios studio build running. Instead of getting one message on power-on, I get the the following on midi in monitor: 00000000953092 ms | Sysex message: F0 00 00 7E 40 00 01 F7 00000000953102 ms | Sysex message: F0 00 00 7E 40 00 01 F7 every *milisecond* (almost) as you can see. I am not sure what this means. Do I not have mios installed? (But, in this case, should I not receive the upload request every two seconds instead of incredibly fast?) Anything on the circuit of the core? Any hints? Now, I still have LCD problems: it is esentially blank, but every once in a while I get weird images on it (a 2x16 character by winstar) Too many problems? :-[

Addendum: running my own PCB with smash tv's PIC. Did all the voltage testing... Desperate...

So, after a few misshaps I manage to wire the LCD to the core. I get all sorts of weird lines, complete nonsense. I invert the cable and only get the backlight, no messages, characters, nothing. dead core after all?

at this point I'm beginning to suspect the home-made USB interface I use (this guy I know did it) might have something to do with it, but will finish the lcd module first. Any experience with odd USB interfaces?

board is entirely my responsability. went through the troubleshooting page, though, all seems ok. just downloaded snoize's MIDI monitor, to check whether is an issue of seeing the activity more so than producing it. On this point, however, having not connected any DINS, AINS, DOUTs, etc. I am really expecting a lot of random activity in the MIDI in monitor? (this is my working hypothesis) ?!?!

Nope. I did try MIOS studio's debugging tool, though. That's as far as I gone, but it seems MIOS Studio doesn't recogniza my USB interface...
