  1. Hey guys,

    It's been awhile since I have posted, but every year I seem to need this application, and always figure out some hacky way to get around it.

    I am wanting to write an app that presses play on my sequencer when I push a button on an NES controller. I am basically going to tap the "Data" out on the NES controller, and wire that into the AIN pin on an MBHP Core module. I figured I would not need an AIN module, since I am just looking to start a song on *any* data piped into the AIN (so no multiplexing required). Would this work? Any ideas for how I should go about writing this application? I could not figure out what functions to call. I think the program needs to run like this:

    Start:

    Initialize; //vague, sorry, I'm not sure what to do here actually

    Set MB module as "master" to all connected devices;

    Mainloop:

    Poll for any change in AIN;

    On change, send start/stop signal to all connected devices;

    goto mainloop

    end

  2. Thanks for the reply Stryd! I really appreciate you jamming the tunes and giving your opinion. Hardcore punk ON/off dynamics are definitely etched into my brain. However, having subtlety within the chaos is something I would not release an album without considering. Different distortion pedals and modes of screaming were considered based on the appropriate levels of violence for each part. The instruments were synthesized and the tunes were written based on where I thought the "peaks" of each song should be. Some of the careful envelope work is obscured by high-gain. BUt the instruments usually poke through the noise like a sincere voice wrapped in flame.

    Like you said - hard to described what I mean without overexamining myself and sounding dumb. But subtlety of expression is something I considered during the whole process, and sought to incorporate!

    Thanks about the covers =D

    The art was drawn by my friend Mike from San Antonio, I did the color seperation and layout with GIMP and then iheartu productions in Houston did the silkscreening. Kind of a group effort.

    Edit: Ah man, I fixed some grammar/word choice and now I have the little "edit" tag below here, thus looking like a moron. I gotta be more careful.

    10 violent and melodic tracks made with midiNES, midiBox sid, Jomox drum machines, and a chain of distortion pedals. I really think you guys would get a kick out of hearing the SID being used in a REALLY unconventional way.

    Mbsid was used on almost every track for a monophonic sawtooth bassline, but it's used by itself for a couple songs (using wavetables for the drums). One track features an experiment of feeding the CC changes from a different synth to the MB with surprisingly cohesive results! You've got to hear this! Check out some samples at www.myspace.com/yatagarasu. The song "Meaningless" should give you a pretty good idea of the madness that's happening. Also "Tapas" shows just how freaking good the sid sounds with distortion.

    I'll upload somemore if you guys want!

    3 Color silkscreened covers! Send an email to chris.monica@ymail.com if you are interested in getting your hands on a copy. You can buy it, or I'll trade someone for the parts to upgrade an MBsid v1 to v2.

    This album was performed this summer across the Southwester United States using an RM1X sequencer and mobile 800 watt system. One of the loudest uses of mbsid yet, I reckon.

  4. Updated dates! Come out if you can!

    If there's anyone in Phoenix, i'm playing a show with the Coitus:

    he uses Commodore and some other old systems and low bit synths to make weird electro jams. The show also has Melted Cassettes, a deadly electronic spazz duo.

    Also Playing in Irvine with Captain Ahab, one of the most interesting electronic artists playing right now. And Anavan - another L.A. punk electronics champion.

  5. Hey guys -

    I have an entirely midi and eprom-based live set that I am touring with this summer. I need some help setting up shows for some of my planned tour dates (The "TBA" ones). Alot of these dates are confirmed though, msg me for more info! I would like to meet some other MBers!

  6. Hey guys,

    Awhile ago I posted a video showing mefreaking out with a 6581 and an NES. 7 of the tracks have now been recorded in my home studio and released as:

    hexcrusher.jpg

    Hexcrusher myspace page

    The tracks on the cd were created using MBSID, midiNES, goattracker, 909 (jomox Ab101) and famitracker. Each song uses just 1 chip, except TEAM DEAD, which allies 2A03 with 6581 to destroy all opposition! The release features 7 tracks in 14 minutes. 1 of the tracks was made purely with an MBSID v1, and another is MBSID v1 + 909.

    Even more chaos will be on the horizon once I get my MBSID v2 built! Then I'm going to rock the PSID files live!

    If you are interested in this music, please also check out

    Yatagarasu, a completely midiNES/bass guitar based chiptune massacre.

  7. Nice topic!

    Professionally: I'm a C# programmer with the software firm Valtech. We develop in brief, tight cycles to deliver apps that can constantly change based on client needs/specs. We're developing a student loan management application right now. I hope it makes life a little easier for struggling students.

    Otherly: I'm constantly busy making and playing music as

    Yatagarasu: Spazz-out Hardcore, grind, noisecore with midiNES and MBSId V1

    Hexcrusher: Educational Chiptunes

    Bishonen: Hyper J-pop breakcore noise mashups

    Shutting Up: Damaged 3-piece prog

    and more.

    Also I setup shows in Hunstville and Houston Texas with the art collective called HYPERACE.

    I write, code and GRIND for the UK's best noise label: LOFI OR DIE

  8. So, Yata, are you matriculating at Sam Houston?

    My daughter is in her first year there, and I would much rather have her associate with the likes of you than the group she's running with....  :-)

    an another note.... we went to see Zappa Plays Zappa in November.... Great to see Dweezle continuing with Franks legacy !!!

    gb

    My matriculating days are over, but I would extend an invite to her (and anyone else willing to make the trip) to our next 8-Bit Huntsville event in March. Also, anyone in Texas who does 8-bit or quirky electronica should get in touch with me about performing there! 1000 watts of speaker power to blast your tunes with.

  9. Yeah, that thing would work for most of what I need, but I'd like to improvise CC changes over the midi files as they play. Not sure how that would work for Mr. Midi. I'm pretty sure something with MB would be able to handle such a thing no sweat.

  10. Try the kawai Q-80/q80ex/q80exe or roland MC-50/mc80/mc80ex or one of the more serious yamaha QY series. Those older MPC's are more inline with the baby QY you already have.

    All of those but the MC80 look like they have around the same capacity as the QY. Am I missing something? The MPCs have as much note ("event") capacity as any of the Roland MCs. The only thing the MC seems to be beating it in is "Direct from disk playback" which is, if it's what I think it is, a winning factor here!
