Thanks for your reply, I am leaning towards faulty encoder or IC ( I accidentally plugged the LCD backwards at some point and had to change it).
Anyone know of a supplier for encoders that won't charge silly amounts for shipping (eg Mouser)?
-
Hello,
Having received and installed the replacement LCD, I am very very close to completion :)
I am having one remaining issue with the detented encoder on the right of the LCD. At first, it would only decrement, regardless of the direction in which it was turned. I updated MIOS and MBSID to the latest versions (having read that it could solve some issues with encoder bounce handling) and now it is pretty much dead ; it doesn't do anything regardless of the direction in which I turn it.
As a workaround I can use the up and down buttons but it would obviously be nice to get it working... If anyone as some pointers I am all ears :)
Cheers,
j00lz

Thanks for all the positive feedback!
I think I will recycle a piece of clear CD case to use as LCD cover, in the way Wilba suggested. This won't be for a little while though as I am currently very busy with house renovations, house selling, a training course, and starting my own business...

Dropped it on my foot and there was nothing "ambient" about the sounds it created...
-
Yes of course feel free to use it as you wish. I would feel very flattered and honoured if it appeared on the main MBSID page. It's like the first step to stardom :hyper:

Still got to put in feedback pots, and some kind of protection for the LCD.
Much thanks to Thorsten and Wilba. I've only just started scratching the surface of this thing, and am absolutely blown away by the possibilities.
The attached track uses mostly presets. All sounds are dry, no effects whatsoever. I sampled most of the stuff and sequenced it in Reason, because that's what I'm used to working with...

I received my panels today and I must say I am very very pleased. I got the matte black ones and they are just as I expected: fingerprints don't show.
I am also extremely impressed with the quality of the machining and engraving. It is absolutely perfect! See pics below.
Now I can finally start playing with epoxy - this will remind me of my boat building days, on a smaller scale
Thanks again Julian!

Very impressive custom build! And nicely documented too! That panel from Shaeffer must have cost you a bomb?!
Amuse-toi bien! (Translation for Engrish speakers: Have fun!)

AU$ 20.00

Ah well I guess that explains why I couldn't find some stuff I recently posted...
Don't worry about it, it can all be replaced. No money was lost, and nobody got injured.
Now I'm off to see if Google archived those blog posts I made... :ninja:

I'm offering for sale a spare set of MB-6582 control surface parts.
This consists of what was offered by Wilba in his Aussie group buy):
50x Switches
15x Encoders
15x Red Waldorf Knobs
1x 4x20 Red/Black LCD
120x red LEDs
AU$97.35 for the lot (which is what I paid at the time), postage extra (should be less than AU$10.00 anywhere in Australia).

1.1k should be ok - Core32 and other circuits use 1.0k there, so the exact value isn't critical.
Cool I'll use a 1K one instead. Just realised my 1.1Ks are 1/2 Watters and are too big.
Thanks again!

Hey Guys,
I'm finally finding time to work on the MB-6582... I appear to have lost the 1.2K resistor that is supposed to go in R6_CORE1. I have some spare 1.1K resistors floating around, can I use this or is the 1.2K value critical? I really don't fancy going down to the shops to buy a single resistor...
Thanks in advance!

Parcel was on my doorstep today :D
Perfect timing as I have just started the base board's construction.
Thanks heaps Wilba!

Hi,
While I haven't yet started work on the MB-6582 panel I have been thinking about it for a bit... The Front Panel Express panels are very nice but outside my budget.
With a decent column-mounted drill, it should be reasonably straightforward to drill all the required holes in the aluminium panel that comes with the PACTEC case.
For the LCD hole, I had a look around for square drill bits but no luck... ;)
An alternative that has worked for me in the past is to drill a hole big enough to accomodate a fine-toothed jigsaw blade, then use that to cut the straight lines of the LCD cut out. With a steady hand (and possibly a bit of filing if required), it is possible to get pretty good results.
As for the labeling, I have had some pretty good results in the past using transparent ink-jet compatible label material (such as http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Office-Supplies/Paper-Labels-and-Envelopes/Labels/Inkjet-Printer-Labels/Clear-Inkjet-Labels/AV936008). Colours other than black tend to let a bit of light through, which is reflected by the brushed aluminium of the panel to good effect. A clear coat of sprayable PU varnish on top ensures good longevity. This technique also allows you to get quite creative with the use of colours. Think of it as the poor man's Lazertran...

The pixels have spoken. Photo is shopped.

Well I haven't heard anything from Wilba so I hope I am not the one holding him up :D
-
Probably a bit too late for advice, but here it goes anyway... ;)
I have had some reasonably good results with A4 transparent inkjet labels from Office Works, finished with a few coats of clear acrylic varnish.
Because the inks are translucent, the technique only works well if the surface on which the label is stuck is not too dark.

Email removed. Sorry.

Hello, I am selling my MB 6582... It is fully stuffed with 8 X 6582s (acquired from Wilba back in the days). Red LEDs, LCD is white on blue background. Works flawlessly. I am based in France but am willing to ship worldwide. Comes with a C64 power supply. I will post better pictures tomorrow these were taken with my crappy phone.
