  1. Yeah, I know you dont NEED spacers but I was thinking about using them anyway.

Yep, rotary encoders are another part that is a pain in the a$$ to get, I had to get mine from voti.

I dont understand why shipping stuff from the US costs so much more than from the UK, I got my SIDs from the UK and the shipping was 3 pounds 50......

Anyway, I'll check out switches plus, thanks Wilba....

  2. Of the type used on the MB-6582? Shipping from Mouser to NZ is $30nz, which is more than the buttons.

Buttons are the only part I am missing to build my CS. After a few hours soldering Im about 3/4 of the way finished with my baseboard and know I'll be itching to get the CS done as soon as Im finished that :)

Also, if I wanted to use spacers for my LEDs what length do I need?

  3. Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you guys know about the experience I had purchasing 3 LCDs from Crystalfontz USA's website.

I bought 2 different 4x20s and a 2x20 but when my order arrived there was the 4x20 model of the 2x20 I had ordered. I figured that becuase I had ordered from New Zealand and the shipping cost nearly as much as the 3 LCDs that it wasnt worth trying to sort out the mistake, all the documentation had the order correctly but they just packed the wrong part.

This was going to be slightly annoying because it meant I couldnt use the template for the simple control surface without some modification.

Anyway, so I wired up the 4x20 but got only backlight, this lead me to believe that I had accidentaly ordered negative contrast LCDs, so I wired up the other 2 4x20s and they worked fine, when I connected up the origional one again I got just the black bars. Took some photos of the 3 lcds, emailed them to crystalfontz and they logged support ticket for me.

Got a response the next day advising that they were very very sorry for the mix up and that they would send me out the correct LCD at thier expense!

Thats excellent customer service, in my experience when a company is on the other side of the world and you have this kind of problem you are screwed really because you either have to ship back the broken/wrong item which ends up costing more than the cost of the item, they basicly never respond to your communications, or worse, they blatantly tell you to get bent.

So even though they did make a mistake in packing my order they were very quick to fix thier mistake and to stand by the quality of thier products by replacing the faulty unit, no questions asked.

  4. Well after much help from many peeps, mostly nILS and Wilba, I have finally managed to get my Core and SID modules all hooked up with the LCD and its all functioning !

Still waiting on parts for the bankstick and control surface, namely EEPROMs and rotary encoders so I cant do much more for now, but am able to bang away on the software midi keyboard in MIOS Studio sweet!

Also on my studio monitors I can detect not even the slightest bit of hum so very happy I went with the optimised power supply, even though I bumbled my way through it :)

Its all still just sittin naked on my desk, awaiting the rest of the bits before I start to house it....

Heres a pic in the meantime, taken just before I hooked up the SID module...

Thanks again so much to everyone who has helped me out over the last couple of weeks!

  5. Sure, I can do white lines...  Hmm, I might even have some green ink somewhere...

Well if you have green and dont mind doing one in that then I would be stoked ! Green LEDs, green on black LCD and lines woudl look sweet.

Just let me know when you are going ahead if you are able to do the green, otherwise Im happy with white....

    Thanks !

    bNb

stike that actually, I think I would prefer white becuase then I can make it any other colour if I decide to :) the green will pretty much just leave me with green as an option :)

  6. Doug, Are we able to get the lines just plain white aswell?

Im making a green LED and LCD one with grey waldorf knobs and so rec or blue lines isnt really going to go with the overall theme but white to match the lettering would.

  7. Nope... Even more a$$ end than that..... New Zealand.... :)

    Hi Bleeps,

Which a$$ end country are you in? If you are referring to Australia, I saw JB Weld at a Mitre 10 hardware store in Perth a couple of days ago.

edit- Fot those who may not know, Australia's former Prime Minister Paul Keating referred to Australia as the arse end of the world.

  8. I was thinking about maybe getting my own panels laser cut and engraved but now I see you are adding these studs to the panels there is no doubt that your panels will be much better, that will save alot of hassle, especially becuase I would have to buy JB Weld from overseas as living in the a$$ end of the world means we dont get common products like this, I was probably going to have to use araldite or something.

  9. I had a chat to SmashTV on the chat server and he suggested that the problem is most likely that I dont have the 9vdc ground connected to the 5vdc + so IM only getting 9v

Gonna check that out when I get home and see if thats the problem first...

    Thanks for the suggestions !
