  1. I'm sure you're right about the character of c64's sample playback being easy to emulate but it's beyond my meagre skills to knock up a hw/sw combo to do it. I hope it is supported in the STM32 SID, the midibox sid would def be the undisputed king of sid synths then.
  2. i haven't got the enclosure sorted yet, but that sounds like a good idea.
  3. actually nils, i'm thinking of using your simple psu design but with a 7812 (with a decent heatsink, 4.2W is dissipated) instead of a 7809 and maybe a high power rated resistor before the 7805 to share the dissipation. I'm hoping this'll work out cos i really don't want to use a c64 psu. If anyone's got any recommendations/warnings for a heatsink and resistor combo, i'm all ears.
  4. Can I infer from this that the approximate current draw for a minimal stereo setup (with LCD and LEDs) is 200-600mA? It'd mean the 7805 would reach over 250C without a heatsink, more than twice its stated temparture tolerance! Would heatsinking something like this be straightforward and can anyone recommend a suitable heatsink? I've never heatsinked anything before, i'd be a bit concerned it would affect the function of the rest of the circuit somehow.
  5. been trawling the internet trying to find a replacement to using a c64 psu to power a single core, dual 6581r4 midibox and i came across this http://www.circuitstoday.com/12v-5v-combo-power-supply i'm not an expert but wouldn't the 7805 get really, really hot? Would a regular heatsink plus some ventilation be enough to combat this problem? can anyone see any other problems with this circuit?
  6. Ah ok, cheers for letting me know. Definitely going to build at least one MBSid, looks like a bit of a beast even w/o sample playback
  7. I think there's something a bit weird about the turrican intro and how it's stored/played back, though this could be my brain farting. It is by far the longest sample i've heard on the c64 either way. Do you remember hearing any other samples being played back? It'd be a bit annoying to play something like Jeroen Tel's Afterburner w/o sample playback. I'd be intrigued to know if there's any way to digitize my own samples and have the MBSid play them back.
  8. Hi again, Does the Midibox SID handle sample playback? i had a look here http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=d23c26cc8dafd1803957cc217db33a57&topic=12408.0 and got a tad concerned that it might not. I've got 6581r4s and 8580s but from the looks of that post it doesn't look like it matters either way, no playback :( I haven't started building my MBSid yet but i'd be a bit disappointed if i couldn't rock out some 4 bit Art of Noise style beats when i finished.
  9. yeah, i've got a feeling that if i built my own pic burner something would most probably go a bit wrong and it'd be a real pain to debug. there aren't that many really cheap pic burners on ebay atm so i might just bite the bullet and ship from smash. cheers for the advice.
  10. hi everyone, i'm currently sourcing parts for a couple of midibox sids. i'd like to get a couple of pic18f4685's with the mios preloaded but it seems that there aren't any in mike's midishop. i know i can get them from smash tv but i'd prefer to get everything from europe (preferably the uk) for cheaper & quicker shipping. any ideas? or would i have to build a burner on veroboard? i did electronics in high school but that was about 10 years ago, i'm not sure how up to scratch my veroboard layout/debugging skills are.
