PIC programmer help

Hi folks, I'm an electronics newbie and I'd like to both build the midibox and also learn PIC programming. I'd like to hear peoples opinions on what programmer to build or buy, and whether things like the Olimex prototype boards are good investments for beginners. I've been looking at the Olimex PG2C, and P40B protoboards.

Should I just build a JDM programmer myself? Is it easy to make one that I can use with ICPROG given that I am very new to electronics? Can one build a good proto/dev board to play with too? Any feedbacks and links would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Iain

Thanks. I also have the PCB for the El Cheapo programmer that comes with "Programming and Customizing PIC . . ." by Myke Predko. Details of it are at www.myke.com

Anyone have any comment on whether it would be worth building or would I be better off just making a JDM on Veroboard?

Thanks,

Iain
