My question is, could I convince the MIDIBox core (PIC18F452) to use the four switch contacts as a DINX1? In other words, could I hook S1-4 up to J9 and expect good results? Depending on how they're wired (it's not clear in the listing, only one connection is given per switch, so maybe they just output 5V when held in?) you may be able to connect those switches to a DIN, or to J5.
