sammichsid display issue

Hello,

After a million years I finally got around to trying to finish off a sammichSID, and am having issues with the display. I believe the unit has been built correctly otherwise. The firmware upload seemed to go ok, but the LCD is only showing the top row of black squares when the contrast is set high. When a midi note is sent to it some LEDs do flash on the unit. I'm pretty sure I toasted something when I first turned it on. There was a bit of a burning smell, so I turned it off right away, but probably not fast enough. Its possible the jumpers or backlight trimpot were not set correctly and the display got toasted. That said, I'm still seeing the black squares so I'm wondering if there maybe isn't another component that might have gotten damaged and is not passing a signal to the screen now, or maybe that the screen itself its just damaged.

Any insight would be appreciated.
