sm midibox

hello all

are you tired of drilling all those holes when making a midibox.

I have been thinking about going surface mount components for chips, resistors, capacitors.

if i use the large smd components i dont think tiny soldering will be too hard.

obviously the boards will need to be changed somewhat

like a mirror image of the ones we are using now.

I believe I will start on one of the smaller/less complex boards like the dout/din/ain.

any of these should be easy to make into sm and wont require any holes at all

(unless you like to use some for connectors).

I would like to know if anyone is keen on this idea.

so i will share the boards (after they are tested or befor if you want to help).

Boards will be stored as a zip WITH a help file saying that size/style all of the components

as to avoid confusion.

Hopefully this will be of benifit to other midiboxers

not just a vent for my frustrations on breaking so many drills yesterday ;)

Sounds cool...

Indeed, very interesting idea.

This would help reducing significantly the size of the boards.

Why not then make an ultra-slim sequencer/SID that can fit in a small suitcase  ;D

If you go for it, maybe you can look at alternative chips (if they can easily be found in shops) that work in 16-bits instead of 8. I found some on the web for AIN, DIN or DOUT I don't remember. That would also help reduce the size.

Best regards,

Lall

I have also been looking at some chips that contain a series of parallel resistors on them obviously for the din/dout boards.

after another look at the board desighn i think it will be a total redesign of the boards i think.

am i right in thinking that this would require some coding.

coding is definatly my weak spot  :-[

but then again this is a concepts board, so fire away

keep the concepts coming.
