Info about CV / Gate signals

Hi midiboxers,

I'm moving my first footsteps into the analog world.

I'm building some analog filters and oscillators so I would like to interface them with other external gears (3rd party analog modules or MIDI stuff via midibox CV). So ... how do the CV / gate signals work? Are there any good references on line? I would like to add a *standard* voltage control interface to my DIY stuff but I'm a bit confused about CV and gate connections, tension values (are them positive or positive/negative) and mappings from CV values and notes.
