1) Is it safe to connect headphones directly to the mixed output pin on the baseboard of the MB6582, or should I connect some headphone driver?
2) How can I install a volume control to the headphone jack? Is a normal potentiometer in series (or parallel?) good enough, and if so, what value would be reasonable? I don't need to make it louder, but lower. -
m00dawg: Did you try the recent software version 2.042?
-
Do C64s come with fans? Do they come with SID chips? :ike:
No fan in my MB6582. Although unlikely necessary, I will install heat sinks on the SIDs. Just to be nice to them.

The top and rear panel has no engraves for you to fill with paint. Instead there is this printed overlay (the rear connectors are identified on the top panel as well). That is the only difference apart from the new display if I understood correctly. And by the way, I don't think it is officially called v3... It is just the third batch, or am I wrong?
-
Ah, the Lexan is the overlay? No, it's just cut there.
-
I have to try that one out then. If it's good, then MBSEQ must be so. :) (I've only used JCH Ed. on the C64.)
-
So, hypothetically, with a USB based MBSID, we could play C64 SID music 100% accurately? Even multispeed tunes with samples?

Ha, cool HVSC2MP3 service! There are my songs too. http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/media/Oakvalley/soasc/soasc_mp3/MUSICIANS/J/Johey/ (Most of mine are CSG8580R5).

I bought eight pieces of 8580r5 in late summer, but I have not had the possibility of trying them until now. Just want to say they all work perfectly and my MB6582 is fully populated. Thank you very much!
-
For real? The MBSEQ is usable enough to replace a MIDI sequencing pc application? Maybe I have to take a look into it then. :)
-
Is that what you are using for your great productions?
It looks pretty much awesome. However, I forgot to mention I'm a libre software masochist. Can't use proprietary code. :)

I recently assembled my MB6582 and now I'm trying to make music. Turns out that I am no fan of MIDI sequencers. Using Ardour in GNU/Linux. I would rather prefer a tracker style editor like ProTracker but for MIDI. Any suggestions? I've googled around, but I just found "tektrack" which has not been updated since 2004. I failed to compile it, but if that's my only option I might be able to fix that.
I would like to have something compatible with Jack Audio Connection Kit in GNU/Linux, so I can sync it with Ardour and other MIDI tools. -
There is a transparent window, very thightly cut so you need to insert it with a slight degree of force and there is no risk it will pop out by itself.
-
TK., enjoy your beer for fixing my encoders! :afro:
-
Very cool! I will try this.
Is it using MIDI for representing the data or does it use a custom protocol over the MIDI hardware? If it is MIDI compatible, I guess you cannot play samples for instance? Good enough anyhow. Just asking. :)
Oh, and next question. Any chance getting this upstreamed?
-
Indeed it does! Thank you very much! Hope Wilba did not send me a new encoder.
This also helped my flawky cutoff encoder on my MB6582. Supergreat!
-
Anybody having a non-flawky encoder on the sammichSID from the latest batch?
Edit: Just sent Wilba a notification about this thread regarding skippy encoders.
-
-
I also had a bad encoder. Wilba has promised to send me a replacement one.
Academic Planner: Did you order your Sammich from this latest batch? Then you probably got a mail with the topic ORDER POSTED. There is the original suggestion.

Awesome! :sorcerer: :sorcerer: :sorcerer:
What was the problem?
-
It's alive! :super:
All cores work superly as well as all eight 8580 chips I bought from someone on this forum months ago.
Hard to find words describing the beauty of this machine with the poor subset of the English language I master. Thank you everybody somehow involved in making this possible, including TK, Wilba, nILS, SmashTV (is that a person or the name of the shop?), Hawkeye and jojjelito! Nobody left out on purpose...
I wish to present some fresh tunes in the near future... :frantics:

Well, no. I don't really know how to install MIOS on 2, 3 and 4. Setting the jumper to one of them does not work. When I query for the device from MIOS Studio, the MIDI out led of the sound card is flasing for a while, then the MB6582 reboots.
Maybe I should swap the PICs to core 1?
Edit: Blast me! You need to change device ID in MIOS Studio as well. :P Uploading MB SID v2 to the other cores... :)
-
Ok, I guess there are steps I need to go through then. I have successfully uploaded MB SID v2 to core 1 and I was just guessing I could do the same for the other cores by just moving the jumper and shoot. But alright, I'll dig into the manual tomorrow (after work :( ). Thanks alot!
And by the way, the control surface is completed, apart from the knobs. Already got sound from the thing. LP filtered sound! :) I'm temporarily using an ATX PSU.

I did not take any photos while building, but it is quite handy to take apart, so here goes... http://midibox.org/forums/gallery/album/176-sammichSID/
(Edit: The album was removed :( .. Photos attached to a post further down this thread.)
Please note that I made the B+ patch a little different to what Wilba suggests, because I missed that piece of information. It does not matter though, as there is a direct connection from my point to Wilba's. As I use an unshielded left over pin from a resistor, I think it's better not risking to connect to wrong pins.
Also, note that I did not install the second cooler on the current limiter, just because I read the guide to fast. Nothing to do about it, as I am using a self adhesive cooling paste (because that's what I had within reach). I don't think the extra cooler is needed though, but you should install it as it is suggested by Wilba.

Cool! I want to drive my big phones, so I guess I'd better getting a good driver then. Any suggestions? Thanks!
