I'm agree with rowan, check and check again!!
If the zener is not in the right polarity, it would act as a 0.65V zener diode (well, it's an easy answer, I don't konw the english word to explain it correctly!!!).
For another power supply, it's not easy with the JDM, I'm going to look at...
I made a Programmer for PIC16f84, and I've got problem with it. I just made an external power supply, and it works fine. On forum, I saw many people having the same problem! that's why I think it can be a power problem

hheeeuuu nan un encodeur c pas la meme chose qu'un potentiomètre! ca n'est pas une histoire de définition ni de led ring pour faire jolie... mais c'est une autre utilisation!
Tiens, pour comparer : si ta souris avait des potentiomètre au lieu de capteur infra rouge (je parle pas de souris optike, mais à boule), ben tu verrai très vite l'interet des encodeurs!!!!!
Pour la discution sur linux : plus stable? d'accord kel OS? Qu'es-ce que ca fait ke Mac OSX ne soit pas libre? ben pas grand chose, mais il faut te dire que si des gens comme TK developpe des projets comme la midibox librement, c'est pas sans raison... Mais je ne pense qu'il n'y a pas lieu de continuer la discution ici, je dirait juste que c'est un choix a faire, il n'y a pas de mieux, mais il y a mieux adapté à chacun.

I use a dual boot system : Linux Slackware, which I use for everything (internet, video, sound, GAME (winex), C/C++, html ect...) and win 2K for games that don't work with winex yet, and for my new midibox (hope to find or make tool to setup it under linux)

May be have an external power supply can be a solution...
Make sure you serial cable is good (wiring)...

De plus, linux est le seul système a posséder des temps de réaction apte à faire de l'audio... et il est surtout plus fiable que windows, et plus libre ke Mac OSX...
TK utilise Linux ;) (et la utilise la GPL pour distribuer le code source de la midibox)

Maybe build another power suplly for the dout module... (with an other 7805)...a led need 0.025A, or less (0.01), the 7805 is for 1A max (0.5A is good)... so with the 220 resistor on the DOUT, you have 0.022A per leds, which make 44 leds max! (44 led on at the same time).
And I don't care about the rest of the midibox! (LCD, pic ect...)

hheeeuuu on a déja discuté de la différence dans un autre post... et ca avait été asez dur lol.
On va dire, n'hésitez pas à me corriger, qu'un encodeur est "relatif", alors qu'un pot est "absolue"... ;D
En gros, un potentiomètre à une position qui correspond à des résistances... l'encodeur envoie un message sur le sens dans le quel il tourne, et la valeur ki lui est associé et qui sera modifié est visualisée par un "led-ring"...
SInon, pourkoi passer à mac, quand on a linux? ;D

You will have to change both thing : the motor vss and vdd, and also the pot wire! (beacause if you just change the motor alim pins, it will go up when it has to go down!!!)

MIOS -> 18f452
so you can start with the pic16f877, and then move on with a 18f452, the only thing to change will be the firmware!!!
And I don't think it's easier to build : it's the same! but with the 16f877 if you don't build the JDM, you will not be able to change the firmaware... with the 18f you can upload the program with sysex!

For instance, if you connect a 2x20 characters display to the MIDIbox64, the 2x4 field at the right side will stay blank.

Bon, pour ceux ki cherche des LCDs, sur http://www.ebay.com un gars vent des 20x2, 16x1, 40x2 et 24x2 à des prix super intérréssant.. je me souviens pas exactement, mais en gros c est $8 pour le 40x2, $6.5 pour le 20x2... bref que du bonheur! et $4 de frais de port... je pense en commander quelques un étant donné qu'il en a un petit stock à ce ke j'ai compris!
Pour les retrouver, cherchez LCD dans la section des composants electronique...

Je viens de finir mon module core, il marche nickel, avec un fader... lol oui j'ai pas les registre à décalage pour les LED ou les encodeurs (et pourtant j'ai un stock de composant de recup assez impréssionant, mais qui devient de plus en plus obsélète... :()

I've got no trouble with the mios, all works (hum.. ths jdm and the core) at the first time. Uploading MIOS and the test program also worked great. I test it with one test program (i'm going to go on now).
But what I want to say is that maybe writing a beginner tutorial can be helpfull for some people. I think there's a way to do thing, build the JDM, the core, test the core with test program ect, and maybe some people don't do it, build to much stuff at a time, and when they test womething goes wrong, but it's too hard to find where...

Bon, je m'excuse déja du retard :-[ J'ai fait les boite et préparé 3 des 5 commandes, mais pour des raison d'horaire d'ouverture de la poste, je ne peux y aller que demain matin... J'èspère que vous aurez plus de chance que moi, j'attends 2 colis dont un depuis plus de 15j... :-/ Je vais vérifier ke je me suis pas trompé en comptant les encodeurs, mais normalement le compte est bon!
voila... je vous pris tous de bien vouloir m'excuser... j'ai pas été très rapide!

I've just finish the Core module, but I have somme question/request :
First, I burn the pic with e de bootstrap loader, it wroks... the I turn on th core, with midiox I send the mios sysex... everything OK I think. And then I upload the application via sysex?
It's not very "clear" for me...
Maybe a debug document for the midibox could be a greta idea (ie, explain how to program, how t use testing application ect... A manual helping to test everything)

hheeuuu nan j'ai aucune idée de combien ca va pesé! surtout ke c'est l'emballage ki va faire une bonne partie du poids je pense! je vous tiens au courant (je me suis couché à 2h45, et déja je suis debout armé d'un cutter et d'un rouleau de scotch de bricolage ;D nan pas pour faire un hold up, mais pour faire des jolies boite d'emballage! lol)

Well... that's why I think a debug manual could be a useful :
If you build the whole midibox, and then power on it will probably don't work!
I make DIY for about 5 years now, and one thing I learn is the murphy's law!! It won't work if you don't understand what you are really doing!
Well, this is the advices I can give you :
first, just build the JDM, burn the firmware in the PIC, see if everything is ok...
Then, build the core (MBHP is easier to build since all module are "independant"), test the voltage on it, put the pic, see what's appening with midiox...
And then build the DIN and DOUT module...
That's why I think, even for small midibox, the MBHP can be the best solution.
I know this site for 9 months now, but I only start to build the midibox last week! I made the JDM, it works so I build the core, it works, so I put the pot test program, solder pot, it works... oki! Just do it step after step (is this english???) and you'll see that it works!
For the 7805 : it output 5V, but it needs more than 8V on input (5V + 3V), but less or equal than 12V (5V+ 7V).
