  1. About how many hours has it taken some of you to build a sammichSID?

It'd be nice to have as a week(end) project. I don't think that sourcing the chips would be TOOOO hard. Maybe get screwed over by a shady dealer or two. T'would not be a quest without dealing with some estranged synth-gypsies or drunken dwarves.

Any reputable chip sellers? I've only ever really seen some up on the ebay. For some reason buying sound chips seems sketchy there.

I built mine in about 6 hours including troubleshooting, perhaps a little more for paint drying and so on. I just worked on it a little after work each day for a few days.

I didn't have that good luck with getting SIDs and Wilba bailed me out in the end as I kept ending up with defective ones. As for whether he has any kits left, or whether he has any 6582s left you'll have to ask him directly. Failing that finding commodore 64s will eventually get you some working 6581 sids if you get enough of them, but finding fully working ones is a needle in a haystack, and I prefer the sound of the later SIDs after hearing them next to each other anyway.

I have a defective SID around here that is good for testing (filters are gone but it makes sound) if anyone wants it.

  2. Thanks for that, just cranked it up to 12V and now looks better.

Edited to add, screen stopped working again while I was moving sid chips around so I decided to resolder the entire thing a third time, now working again so must've been a really stubborn dry joint.

  3. ...and the screen has just spontaneously started working for reasons I cannot fathom. Plugged my chips in sans sids which I don't have yet and it is booting fine.

Screen is working with the low power jumper config.

  4. Tried it with JP4 both on and off - when on it was only for a very short time to see if I could get a response, but nothing. I have not tried 12v and won't do so until I get some confirmation as to what the correct settings are.

  5. If that LCD is at 5v 260ma if I read the sheet right doesn't that mean it should be set up as a low power LCD on the jumpers? My order stated that I would be shipped a high power one and I am just at the stage of setting up the jumpers now so was asking on here as the LCD has "5V" written in large friendly letters on it. I thought feeding it the 12v for a high power LCD may not have been a good idea without asking first so I came on here and found this thread.

Also, just to vent, I was outbid on the C64s I was bidding on... Oh well it might be a while longer before I get those sids :)
