Bipolar Stepper motor as a rotary encoder?

I just ordered the core +ain +din kits so i havent been able to test them yet, but does anyone know if a bipolar stepper motor can be used as a rotary encoder? Would you need any additional circuitry or could it be hooked up like a regular rotary encoder?
