sammichSID MIDI In Problems *FIXED*

okay...

I've been having problems with MIDI IN for a bit now and only got the 'transfer message to lcd' to work once after many checks over soldering, jumpers, etc.

So somehow when I fired everything up today I got an idea and decided to delete and then download MIOS Studio again, and for some reason I was able to get the hex file working and format the banksticks (I worked as fast as I could to get this going just in case MIDI stopped working again). All the buttons and knob work...and then MIDI stopped again when I tried to upload the presets. It got to '002 Techno PWM' and then stopped recieving. So MIDI IN does seem to have some issue, but it appears to initially work on first power up if the synth is left out overnight without power. Also, I took a reading at J2 and I get 5.14. At J20 and the SIDs IC socket I'm getting 19.22. What do you think's going on?

btw, I have not installed the SIDs yet.

my config is-

2x6582s

12v.5A regulated wart

Vista

using elektron tm-1 usb midi device

19.22V at J20 is wrong. That should be regulated at exactly 9V by the 7809 voltage regulator.

I am assuming you (correctly) did not install shunts at JBP and have the shunt at JP set horizontal (8580/6582).

I am not aware of any way that regulated 12V DC going into a 7809 can produce 19.22V.

What kind of walwart are you using? If it is a switchmode, then perhaps that explains the voltage strangeness.

Also, check your multimeter is correctly measuring voltage. If this walwart outputs 12V then you should measure this first.

Measure all the other points as described in the voltage tests... especially the voltage going into the 7809.

We can work on the MIDI In issue after you get sensible voltages... perhaps this is also the cause of the MIDI In not working, the PIC isn't getting a stable voltage or the MIDI circuit is failing due to voltage not being stable.

okay...so I'm a moron. I wasn't on V, but on ohms due to a very overused and worn multimeter. All the voltage checks are right on at 9V and 5V. ...now to figure out the MIDI IN problem. I'm going to run some tests tonight while I'm working on some other projects, but if you have any ideas I'm game.

Thanks!

update:

I added the SIDS and everything sounds GREAT!!! ...that is, the lead and techno pmw sound great. I can't get the presets to load, but I played around quite a bit with the virtual keyboard in MIOS Studio and it works like a charm.

Why won't all the presets load I don't know, but so far it sounds really good with just the 2.

You have to upload the presets. They are in the presets/v2_vintage_bank.syx. Upload it with midi ox or mios studio 2(?).

I know this. What keeps happening is that when the presets start loading, it gets two of them loaded and then some error pops up and says that the connection was lost or bad. The sammich plays well, though, from my MnM, so I'm a little unsure why the presets won't load all the way.

since the midi in seems to be working otherwise, I'd guess that the problem lies with your midi interface failing to send sysex messages properly. I had to try several interfaces before I found one that worked. The tm-1 is known to be a little finicky in this regard, with some users reporting sporadic connect/disconnect problems etc. It's hard to be 100% certain, but I'd try a few different midi interfaces and see if that solves the issue before moving on to other trouble shooting methods.

damn tm-1 turbomidi was the problem. Ran MIDI through my pcr-30 and everything now works GREAT!!! havin' a ton of fun with all the patches now. Must get back to the sound. :) Thanks everyone for the help!

Awesome! Out of curiosity, does the tm1 send correctly if you disable turbo mode? (don't feel obligated to check this, it would just be interesting info)

turbo mode is only engaged when devices that have the turbo capability are connected. The light above turbo will remain lit when turbo mode is activated, otherwise it defaults to normal MIDI mode.

...I wonder if the tm-1 is the main problem behind syncing to programs (eg ableton, guru, cubase). I typically use it only when I'm updating my MD or MnM and have never had an issue, but there are quite a few threads over at elektron-users with problems syncing things up and I'm thinking that if it's having problems with MIOS Studio that it might also be having issues with other bits of software. hmmmm...going to have to write elektron about this.

thanks again for the idea jbartee!

Ahh okay, I see. The tm-1 certainly seems like it has some compatibility problems. Anyway, glad you got it sorted!
