Softly Softly - Drums!

I was playing with my lovely sammichSID over the weekend, had a great time with it, what a great piece of kit! It's properly fat!

However, for one of my songs I need quite a soft snare, if you think of a gentle 808 snare, that's really the direction I'm heading.

Anyone got any tips on how to get a nice soft sound like this? Or am I really using the wrong bit of kit for this? :o)

My initial guess was using noise and a high pass filter.

I found a tutorial here however, half way down the page.
