The USB module looks pretty cool, but I'm interested in something with more than 2 inputs and outputs.  I'd like a rackmount unit with 8 inputs and 8 outputs.  Does anyone know if I'll have any problems running more than one USB module on the same computer?  I was thinking of using 4 USB modules in the same case and just chaining them together with some kind of USB hub.  Does anyone have a better suggestion?

Thanks

Yes you can, also it is *very* doubtful if this is useful.

I would stick to a normal 8x MIDI Interface (check ebay and others).

If you really want to do that: The different MIDI Ints. will be assigned as "Audiogeraet(1)", "Audiogeraet(2) and so on (german version...). You can edit the assignment in the .reg files in wondows (check the software of the MBHP USB, there it is described).

You should definetely use a USB hub!

I'm beginning to think you're right.  But pretend I could get the Cypress chips and the rackmount case for free or real cheap, would it still not be worth it?  I figure it would cost $100 or more for an 8 port MIDI interface on ebay, but I could build one for almost nothing.  Is there some problem with the USB module plans?

Nearly nothing is not quite right:

4x AN... (that SMD chip) ca. 40 Euro

4x USB board ca. 25 Euro

Other parts (24LC064 and so on) ca. 20 Euro (should be more)

USB Hub ca. 10 Euro

The case (if built by yourself) ca. 10-30 Euro

That makes at least 100 Euro! Plus the working time (which is gonna be a lot!). I think ebay is yours with thios one...

You could save some money by making the PCBs on your own and getting some chips as samples (from Microchip and Texas Instruments), but still: This would be even more work and still about 70 Euros.

This is DIY. Its not for saving money at all reason ( its ALSO saving money - especially in bigger projects). Its making your own design thats perfect for your workflow and that looks cool for yourself at first(check my MB64 on MB Gallery  ;D).

I guess I should have been more specific - thanks for the advice, but I already have all of the chips as samples, except for the Cypress chips.  And the Cypress samples are hopefully on the way.  I can make the PCB myself fairly cheaply - I'm planning to combine all 4 modules to fit on one board.  If I don't build my own USB hub into the same PCB, I have an extra USB hub lying around here.  I have an empty rack mount case that's ready for the trash and I'm sure I can rob all of the connectors from other junk.

So, just pretend that I really can build this for practically nothing and I don't mind spending time on it - is there some technical reason not to or is a commercial version really that much better?

Oh OK, I didnt know that. No, then theres not technical reason for buying a commercial one (just the installation is a little fuzzy, but thats all).

Have fun! And put a picture of that thing on the portal!  :D
