Encoder confusion????????

Ok, so I’m getting ready to order my encoders for a midibox 64e, and cant figure out which ones I should get. I looked over the web site and searched through the forums to try figure it out, but I’m still feeling a bit confused ??? as to which encoders I should actually order. The instructions on the web site suggest that non-dented rotary encoders are the way to go but, when I go to the link that has a list of suppliers and suggested encoders I notice that the encoders from Mouser are 24 dented encoders ( I live in the States so will be ordering from them ). Now, if I go for the 24 dented encoders is this going to be a present any problems with sensitivity or resolution of signal , or will I not notice a significant difference between dented and non-dented (aside from the enormous price jump). Any help in clearing this up is greatly appreciated.  ;D

Oh, and the other question about the dented encoders  I had, was, do dented encoders "click" when you turn them or is the action smooth, like a potentiometer?

Detended Encoders are the ones which click on turning them. Non detended are smooth as potis.

Mouser does not have any non detended types? weird...

The resolution (in MIOS *!*) is in fact different. Check out the MIOS docus for that. With non detended types you can quadruple the resolution, with detended only double it...

I picked up some Panasonics from digikey.com

p/n P10860-ND

disclaimer: haven't tested them yet

They are DETENTED (clicks), but maybe they have some non-detented...

As far as mouser goes they do have non-dented encoders, its just that they are 2 to 3 times the price of the dented ones, same with digikey. But hey ya know maybe I’m just going to have to pay the premium if I am to get exactly what I want. I would really like the non-dented ones as they seem, like they would have a good “feelâ€, any opinions on this? Anyone had a chance to use both, dented and non-dented? Any pros or cons to either one? And  does the quadrupled resolution make that big of a difference in the functionality?
