Hello and question about merging MBSID with keyboard.

Hi guys, I stumbled upon the midibox site looking for some midi electronics project to play with and am just amazed at the prospective ease of the MBSID. All the hard work and technical knowledge that would usually be out of my current reach has been taken care of for me.

Now, I have most all of my parts on order, with the exception of the power supply. See, I would like to build a basic single MBSID with step A controls into the case of a Yamaha midi keyboard I also have on order. Preferably to wire the keyboards midi out to the MBSID's midi in internally (or perhaps with a short external cord to keep the midi ports usable). The keyboard says it pulls 35ma off of 6 AA bateries or 2 W off of an AC adapter. Could I power both the MBSID and the keyboard off of the batteries, even if I have to use more than the 6? My intentions are to make this portable and self contained so that I just have to plug into my amp.

Yes, thanks. Forgive my lack of electrical knowledge, but we all have to start somewhere. Does the 5v regulator on the core drop the 9v down to 5v? If so then the single 9v power supply should be enough for the whole setup (albiet not long lasting), right?

Hi,

a single 9V supply is fine. Use a display without backlight! The backlight of most displays take 100 up to 500 mA, so the batteries won´t last long.

But 6 batteries won´t work very good. Rechargeable batteries normally have about 1.2 or 1.3 Volts per cell. 1.2x6 is only 7.2 V which is not enough. But even if you use alkaline batteries, their voltage will drop lower long before they´re empty. I´d suggest using a supply of around 12 V and use the regulator cirquits on the boards to get 9 and 5 V. So if you´re going to use alkalines, take 8 cells and if you want to use accus, take 9 or 10 cells.

Thank you very much, that was the info I was looking for. Alas, I'm running into space issues with my keyboard, so I've either got to decide how to make the keyboard shell taller or I need to make a seperate box...I'm leaning to the latter now. Your info is still of much help though. I'll be hoping to post pics of my box soon.
