Easier way to remove 6581 from socket in C64?

My SID chip is stuck in ths socket and doesnt want to come out!

I tried removing another as a test with some pliers and chipped some of the plastin on the side, this is just the casing right, and wont damage the chip?

Usually i try to gently lift ICs by putting a small flat scewdriver between the chip and the socket. Don't use too much force and avoid tilting the chip too much or the legs will bend and break.

OR you can try one of them special chip-lifter-plier-type-of-thingies.

If the phucker is firmly stuck, just have a bit of patience removing it...  ;)

I have made this bad experience with one analog/digital converter on my AIN module  :-/

Definitely use an IC-puller, those cost ¤5 at most, which is way less that any SID, with or without the added frustration of killing the beauty.

if I chipped some of the plastic will that hurt the chip? thats just the casing right?

I guess theres no way for me to tell until I turn it on...

Just thought............Get the 64 board out of the old box.

Cut around the outside of the SID socket leaving a perimeter of about 100mm.

Then get the cut out piece with the chip on it and flex the board, you know, twist it from corner to corner.

This should flex the socket and make the first loosening you need to get the chip out comfortably with a screwdriver.
