i'm planning on making a controller for DJ purposes and was wondering if there is a difference between a fader and a crossfader on a MIDI controller?

obviously there is in a "real" dj-mixer, but when it comes to controllers i don't have to purchase a special crossfader do I? i just put a fader there instead and the software will manage to be set up so that a 0 value is max left and 127 value max right, right?

Yes, there is some difference:

Normal DJ-crossfaders do have two channels with logarithmic scale (and they react counterwise - as the one channel goes up the other one goes down). Faders for Midiboxes should have linear scale (so the middle position is giving you a perfect 63 - with logarithmic scale it would give you something like a 30 or so) - two channels are also not needed, as you only use one of them.
