Hot Lixx guitar\midibox idea

I recently dug an old Hott-Lixx toy guitar out of storage, and I though it might be fun to build a basic midibox64 into it.  Here's a picture of one:

I was thinking a CORE and a DIN module would be all thats needed.  There's only one knob, maybe a rotary encoder for program changes or somethin'.  The rest of the toy is covered in buttons, which I'm hoping still work.  I was thinking of using this to control a software sampler.  Anyway, I guess I don't have any specific questions, I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas (for expansion, changes, features...).  An LCD perhaps?  Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

This is the second thread I've seen with someone putting a midibox into a toy guitar, and the second one where I've thought "I gotta do that".  ;D
