How many enable lines should a 55 x 2 Character LCD have?

Hi,

Just a quick question as to how many enable lines should a 55 x 2 character LCD have? I thought it would have 2, but I got my hot little hands on one of these displays (sorry guys, it was a one off) and it seems to only have 1.

i.e. 16 connections - 2 for backlight and 14 for all the other usual stuff.

I have to work out the pinout now as no datasheet is available because it's an OEM. Do you think it pretty safe to assume the pinout is standard?

As you can see there's no provision for lines > 40 characters traditionally speaking, but there are ample addresses available so it's possible.

I assume the driver IC's have a gob of glue on em and you can't read any numbers off them?
