mios troubleshooting

Hello! :D

I'm trying to upload mios,to core,voltage 5v all the a way around

I've build two cores, the first one I had troubles(uzipping mios),,& monitor in of mios studio stateded:

#'s (different) ms [ff] system reset (? ?)

did that on last core(PIC),build new one today (with extra care)

and same thing in monitor ?  :-\

never tried any thing this time..(eg,uploading mios)

last go(on first core) I tried to upload bootloader ::) (didn't unzip mios right,,no read me doc.)

But quickly realized and then tried mios. .

and it was stating 000000000######  ms  [FF]  system  reset    :-\

same with fresh core(PIC)  System reset when I apply power to core

Used mios studio keyboard to control one of my synths, played notes, change programs FINE ;) But unfamiliar to computers with midi...use midi hardware,,

Have been using midi troubleshooting with no luck.. ???

eg.midiox... nothing shows up?

(KITS ARE FROM SMASH :o)

thanks for taking the time to read this..

So, the monitor always receives a 0xff and never another MIDI byte?

Which tests of the MIDI troubleshooting guide did you try, and what are the results?

They are enumerated now, so it's easy to write down - for example:

TEST OUT1: LED flickers

TEST OUT2: using a xxx PSU (replace xxx by the one you are using...)

...etc...

Best Regards, Thorsten.

Here's where I'm at with the testing

TEST PROG1: If you are not sure that the bootstrap loader has been burned successfully, use the verify function of IC-Prog/P18

(wasn't sure what to do?With this one?)

TEST CORE1: ensure that you've stuffed a 10 MHz crystal  (I think ,if it still need to be with new kits)

TEST CORE2: only relevant for MBHP_CORE_V1 and MBHP_CORE_V2 PCB: are all 5 jumpers connected (not sure is this for older kits?)

TEST CORE3: Check it visually for bad solderings

(all looked good, incase I built another core)

# TEST CORE4: Check Vdd of the power supply like shown here: mbhp_core_extract_measuring_vdd.gif (Did,but going to go over once again)

# TEST CORE5: Check the ground of the power supply like shown here: (got to check)

# TEST CORE6: Check the polarity of your MIDI plugs: (as shown on smashes page,to pbc)

# TEST CORE7: Check the polarity of the protection diode D1: (good)

# TEST CORE8: Check the resistor values at the MIDI Out Port: R8 and R7=220 Ohm (resistor code: red-red-brown)(all good)

# TEST CORE9: Just to ensure: this diagram shows a crosslink between the core module

(missed this one,checking out now)

TEST CORE10: (didn't seem to be the problem)

TEST CORE11:(not using interface)

TEST OUT1: (Lights up led and stays lite, does not flicker

TEST OUT2: disconnect the middle pin of J12(not sure how to do this with pbc style,or if I need to with my envoirment)(going to try diffent psu, like you mentioned above, now, and check monitor in mios studio)

    *  TEST PC1: check the MIDI-Ox configuration (checked but not sure if I am selecting right ones(nothing shows up in midiox?,I've tried a few settings..going to go over agian)

    * TEST PC2: ensure that the MIDI interface of your computer is working: (never tried this but will go ever last two(testein pc,again now))

I am building up ltc(may help with upload),just ran out of sodderI might also add my computer is older with win 98(waiting on new one should be here soon,it has midi i/o on sound card(new one)

? DO YOU THINK I MAY HAVE MESSED FIRST PIC WITH BAD UP LOAD,STILL GET SYSTEM RESETS WITH BOTH CORES(PICS")WONDERING IF I SHOULD ORDER ANOTHER

Thank you very much for your help!  :D

and thanks TK  for making these projects info available to geeks like me! STELLER!

On the other hand: when the LED does not flicker on test TEST OUT1, it's very likely that the PIC is not running - just double and tribblecheck the schematic vs your board (missing components, bad or missing solders, PIC plugged the wrong direction into the socket)

So it must be a problem with the circuit board? ???

I solder alot,& joints look great 8)

Both built cores(2) do the same thing,LED's stay lite, flicker at first, but might be my rage showing in my hands?(slightly shaken) (?does that mean? no sign of life?no upload request?

PIC placed like smashes site notch facing C4 (Could the 9v 500ma dc wall adaptor messed the pic chip??on both cores or from the computers midi out???no problems with synths)the voltages were 5.01 in all the right places, tried other walladaptors since with no luck eg 9v 500ma ac , 9v 850ma dc, Sould I try somthing lower? 7-8v? more ma?Does q1 need to be placed a certain way?? :-\

Vr 7805 flat side is away from circuit board..

ic2 dot in right top corner?

all parts looked good ,went over and over and over and over? ??? :'( ???

Should I post a picture?

(not using c64 power unit,have 9v 500ma dc walladaptor from a telephone)

Could it be a ground problem?? both wires from psu go directly to j1

If it's the board,I must have a part placed wrong,on both??  :-\

Can't find it,if so? soooo stuck..

If you could help me at all,I thank you! :)

Kits look Right,well soldered.

Ideas of problems(considering problem is on two cores built at diffent times:?

not grounded properly?

bootstraploader not loaded properly?

iron was to hot??(found on road, parts checked eg,resistors good, and was quick to solder)

Computer is the problem?( but led on midi lights up constant)

Checked over and over..unless a part is in backwards eg. Q1?

p1 or p2?? for lcd backlight?

should I buy more cores? Really want sid 6581 AR in music

Any Ideas?

Where are you living? Maybe there is somebody who lives close to your location and could help you (or you could send him the PCB via mail service) - all your assumptions cannot be answered remotely without testing the circuit, because when you are very sure that the boards are soldered correctly, and if you are sure that you connected the LED at MIDI Out with the right polarity, it must flicker. Otherwise the only possible reason I know is, that the bootloader hasn't been burned into the PIC, but this is unlikely, since this never happened before

Best Regards, Thorsten.

I live in prince edward island Canada  (east coast) (I have built many different kits before with no problems?midi kits, mods etc.) (there really isn' t that many parts??) I Got the kits at different time also ??  So i think one parts must be backwards?? Q1,Vr,Ic2?

I have one more core to build,But was hopeing to save for a future machine

(Read,and hopefully utilize a differnt chip,or build a sid with keys,with adsr cut res,dials ;D

seems a far way off at this pace ;D ;D)

Thank You Very Much For your Help..

All the best to you!!      I will continue to examine core
