  1. Hi all,

at the moment i am designing the frontpanel for the opl3 synth, and i am asking if it´s possible to change the buttons for the instrument / operator selection.

my idea is to have for instrument 1-4 and operator 1-4 a dedicated button, so instead of five buttons , eight buttons.

i know that i need three more digital inputs and that means an extra Din chip, but that would be ok for me.

since i don´t build anything yet, i don´t know if this has any advantages in handling the synth, but it would defenitly better fit in my frontpanellayout.

    thanks

  2. hello all,

just checked the maxim homepage. price for the 525 is 11,95 US dollar, what is about 9-10€ at the moment. so this price seems pretty reasonable for me, for this  quad 12bit DAC. and i never had any problems with this chip, although it came in ssop package (at least i know that i don´t have to fear the Midibox FM). maybe smash TV wants to take them in stock so all non US diyers don´t have to pay taxes and stupid high shipping costs.

and we all know the advantages of analog filters, but analog oscillators are huge as well, and as far as i know is the difference between 10bit and 12bit quite huge, if you want accuracy for the pitch.

but i like the resistor ladder solution as well. very simple and very undestroyable.

  3. i wanted to bring this up again, cause i received the package from illogic last week.

great stuff, hope that i can use these wonderfull little chips soon, and control my modular synth.

Until now i refused to think about the possibilities i have. too much for my small brain

but thanks again to illogic and Smash TV. Great work.

  4. Hi,

this looks like a real promising project. Unfortunatly i have absolutly zero programming skills but i really like the idea of mixing digital control with analog sound prozessing. I am very keen on hearing the wavetable wave-PIC´s. Because even if the tuning of analog osci´s make often problems, the  sound of two at nearly the same frequency is quite impressiv...i can only compare virtual (vst´s, reaktor) and the SID osci´s with my analog ones though.

a few thoughts for the analog side:

The dual VCA will use a single LM13700

i have build quite a few vca´s from CA3080 to BA6110 designs i came up that the Lm13700 vca from Mike Sims is the best sounding, it just uses one Lm13700 for one vca. This is just one more cheap chip, but 50% sound improvement.

The mixed audio output will run through a filter, most likely a Wasp Filter clone

I build that filter (JH design) and it is very nice and simple but the notch section is mostly unusable. maybe one can improve this, and the distortion can improved as well. I heard a lot of good things about the Steiner/Parker VCF though.

The analog board will have an LM13700 OTA, a CD4069UB and an analog switch in the filter section

Do you thought about controlling the switch digitally. Since i have the MBSid synth i don´t want to miss the feature of storing the filtertype setting. This could be realized with a quad cv waveform selector, or even JH´s filter scanner.

Again, this is a _very_ long-term project, so don't expect much anytime soon

I like long term projects, when TK is building a box in 2 month i need 2 years for that.

Looking forward for the next steps with this project.

  5. Hi Hermes,

Just wondering: where must I connect the extra buttons and leds in the din and dout chain? Are these buttons and leds the last ones in the row?

You can connect them wherever you want, just need to adapt the mios_io_tables.

Thats the file where you can route any funktion to any Din/Dout.

  6. Hi Bosone,

the first button and leds i implemented were for the LFO Sync.

After Thorsten came out with version 1.6 i wanted to control the shape of the envelopes aswell with buttons.

I was wondering how can something like this be realized? (I am currently constructing my CS). Does it require modification of main.asm and if yes, how can this be done?

Yes you need to change the main.asm. I can only tell you what to do for the changes i made, for your own you maybe need to ask Thorsten..

  7. hi,

i just cannot find a supplier for the NJU7304D sample and hold chips (for the MBHP_SHX8 ) in europe. And mouser is charging 12 US dollar for shipping and i made some bad experience once ordering chips from US. Payed 30€ extra for duty.

    Does anybody know something.

    I need 4 of them.

    thanks

  8. hi Phattline

    Whats that-maby a operation ampliefier-

Do you now whats the full name- or a second product

    072

    071

    Thats a TL072 or TL071, a standard Op-amp.

I have ordert this pcbs: but I dont find this types in Germany (Reichelt)

Hey i ordered two as well,

    ZTX1051A
thats the substitute for the 2SD1496. I didn´t find a supplier as well, but i will use some Fmmt691 SMD substitutes i still have from my old TR909 clone

2SC2878 (have high reverse current gain
i think you don´t need these as the muting circuit is not used.
    MAX 525
    Sample order at Maxim.
    NJU7304D
i could find it only at Digikey in US.
    LM723
should be avaible at Reichel (µA 723 DIL).

What meens unbufferd, what type is this

    4011UB (USE unbuffered (4011 U..)device only)

    4069UB (USE unbuffered (4011 U..)device only)

I didn´t do a search on these one, but the UB is just a special variation of the B type. It seems not so common though

Polyester: Is this the same like Foil capacitors or is this styroflex capacitor

i also would like to know this.

Polyester MKT: Is this the same like Foil capacitors or is this styroflex capacitor
These are the standard MKT/MKS Types you get when ordering at Reichelt. The pinspacing for the Trevor board seems to be 7,5.

    Hope that helps

But why do you need the NJU7304D?

  9. @pay_c

    @Phattline

250 Watt 230 Volt Nitrad Lampe besorgt-

kannst du noch mehr dazu sagen? Was heißt Nitrad?

    keine Kupfer nix----ahhh urgl exkrement

Also ca. 2 Jahre.

    TAKE 2a: 5 Minuten

  12. Dear vtl5c3 (like this name)

This all sounds far too simple!!!  Forgive me for being skeptical.

after building 100 synth modules your are right in beeing skeptical and you should know that everthing is more complicated than expected!!!

I'm looking for a way to create a multi-channel MIDI analog sequencer, but preferrably cheaper than the Doepfer MAQ

Your are absolutly in the right place here. but i wouldn´t build it with pots like the MAQ, instead i would use encoders. (You need more DINs and no AINs)

Just read Thorstens thoughts about the different hardware options.

nce I have everything assembled, all I have to do is hook up the core pcb to a PC via MIDI and dump the MIOS into it?  Will it know to detect how many rows of pots are connected, how many LEDs, LCDs, e

If you assemble the encoders, buttons, LCD and Leds exactly like Thorsten´s pdf ( just check them out and you will understand more) than you don´t have to change anything in the Program (even though it is very easy). But first you need to get bootstraploader on the PIC. You can do this by building a PIC burner or you ask a nice MB member to do that for you. Then you load up (over Midi) the MIOS (operation system) and then the application (in your case the SEQ app.)

After that you have a very beautiful sequencer. If you want to control your Vtl5c3´s than you have to build the CV output extension as well.

Hope i to help you. Read the Homepage as often as you can and you will get it.

  13. how do you make the printing on the case?? with silkscreen?

Normally i used silkscreen, but as this panel is not straight i tried something different.

i did it with normal paper and laser printer, (on A3) and "sprühkleber" and lacquer. i think 20 different layouts. The Layout was made in Freehand.

Advantage: you don´t see the screws and mistakes which happen during drilling. And its very cheap

Dis: when its really wet in the room it makes small bubbles, because the glue was not the best. You can see it around the Lcd where i made the hole bigger then a finally wanted, have to fix this though.

Took me more then a year to build this little beast, but its worth it. better than the virus.

  14. Cool another mac user here. Enjoying the worm free zone!!!

I also have eagle on my ibook G4 running and it works very well. I think you can just import/open .brd files which are made with eagle v4.11 or newer. Or you can ask someone to open old eagle files in v4.11 and save them for you in the new version.

Burning might work with a usb2serial converter but you need a burning software. Don´t´know if there is any.

I was lucky and got an old P2 AMD Laptop which i use for these kind of  things.

  15. I'd like to take some of them out and replace them with components I could control with the SEQ+AOUT.

Does that seem like a feasible thing?

so far as i can see the vermona is not supporting cv inputs, only triggers but you need cv inputs to control what the pot is doing know. And this is not very easy. maybe you find someone whow did this allready with the vermona but i wouldn´t experiment by myself. Its more than a transistor for sure.

What is the resolution of the AOUT? Is it 0V or +5V only or can it be anywhere between @ 5/128th increments or what?

The DAC has a resolution of 12bit and right at the moment the SEQ is supporting 7bit, that means you have 0 to 12 volt in 128 steps.

  17. Hi,

i searched the forum but couldn´t find the thread where this was discussed.

Since i am in my MBoxSEQ planning phase (at the moment i use my SID CS for checking out this beautifully SEQ), i was thinking about adding led digits mostly because i like them.

    1. Is it possible to add led digits to the SEQ firmware or does this require an other core in LINK mode?

    2. I checked out the testapps. for clk and MTC, but couldn´t figure out whitch would be the best. And i was thinking that the BPM could be displayed as well.

I know that the feature list is very long, i just want to know if this makes sense and if it´s possible for me (i am not a programmer). And because i needed more than one year for my SID, there is no hurry at all.

Sorry if this thread comes up again but i couldn´t find anything.

    thanks a lot.

  18. Hi Thorsten,

complete setups. This will be especially useful for saving sound patches of a single synthesizer

That was exactly what i was thinking of. Especially my little modular synth.

    Thanks for the quick reply

  19. One little question.

Is the MBox64E going to support the Aout and Amux as well?

Couldn´t find it on the list. Maybe there is a reason for that. Or is the Midibox CV planned for that?

    Thanks

    chriss

Btw: i put my MBox SID in a nice housing but can´t make pictures in the moment. It looks so good that i just want to use it because of that. My advice to everyone: Build it as nice as possible, it pays off.
