  1. I think I was getting MIDI feedback there, for some reason.... Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  2. OK, well I tried the correct file, but sadly it didn't work. Different set of errors this time though. Not sure what that means though. Looks like the MIDI in still isn't working. I'm off to work now. Alex http://www.toneburst.net Starting upload of mios_v1_9c_pic18f452.hex Hex file contains code in MIOS range, forcing reboot! 3. Doh!! I'll give that other file a go as soon as I get a chance. Incidentally SmashTV, do you remember that red neg. LCD you got for me? I finally got around to hooking it up at the weekend, and it turns out it IS pink, as a couple of people suggested, and the background is definitely not black, as the pic on the Crystalfontz site indicates. I'm not too disappointed though- it actually looks quite nice! I'm considering getting a white neg. one and putting some sort of coloured gel over it. That way, I can have any colour I like. Alex http://www.toneburst.net PS sorry about the cross-posting
  4. Hi moogah! thank for getting back to me! Not quite sure what you mean about this already being resolved. I may be missing something obvious though.... My Setup is: • SmashTV PIC with Bootstrap v.1.2 preloaded • Using MIOS Studio to upload running on an Apple MacBook Pro under MacOS 10.4.8 using NI Kore and M-Audio MIDISport 2x2 USB MIDI interfaces (tried both with similar results). • I got the HEX file from the MIOS downloads page, it's the very first file in the list. maybe it's completely the wrong one.... Ah...... I may have answered my own question here. Is it completely the wrong file? Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  5. Hmmm... that'll be me too... I double-posted, I'm afraid. Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  6. I made an Optimised PSU to reuse one of my C64 power supplies. Testing the volatages, it seems to provide a consistent output of approx. 5.13V. Having said that, it is the first time I've mad a circuit from a circuit-diagram for about 10 years (and I only did it once then). The LCD did flicker a few times when it was first connected, but seems fine now. do you think it's worth ordering a replacement optocoupler Thorsten? Cheers, Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  7. Any idea which of these would do the job? http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/rswww/searchBrowseAction.do?Nr=avl%3auk&N=4294731603&Nty=1&callingPage=/jsp/search/search.jsp&Ntt=optocoupler|dip8&Ntk=I18NAll|I18NAll&D=dip8&obs=sObs&BV_SessionID=@@@@0199336183.1160326197@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccladdjdfilhkecefeceefdffhdgmn.0&cacheID=uknetscape Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  8. Ah... I might try that. Are the optocouplers 'off the shelf' items? If so, I'll just get a new one. I need to order some bits and pieces anyway. Cheers, Alex
  9. I'm having major problems uploading MIOS to the core PIC for my MIDIBox SID. I get the follwing when I try to upload: Starting upload of update_without_installed_mios.hex Hex file contains code in MIOS range, forcing reboot! Received error code 0C: MIDI IN Frame Error This was an expected error - please ignore! I can't try the MIDI-OX loopback tests, since I'm on a Mac, but I'm pretty sure the PIC is receiving something from the Core's MIDI-In port now. What else can I try? Incidentally, MIOS Studio doesn't seem to work on my PPC-based Mac G5 (MacOS 10.4.8). It runs OK, but the GUI doesn't redraw correctly, and I can't route my MIDI in and out ports to MIOS. Oddly, it works fine on my Intel MacBook Pro. Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  10. Tried a different USB MIDI Interface (this time an M-Audio MIDISport 2x2). I'm now getting a different error message when I try to upload (still doesn't work though): Starting upload of update_without_installed_mios.hex Hex file contains code in MIOS range, forcing reboot! 11. Well, I've been through the tests again, and am now getting different errors in MIOS Studio. definately getting a MIDI in signal between pins 26 and 31 of the main PIC chip, and between pin 31 of the PIC and pin 6 of the Optocoupler. I cant try the MIDI-OX loopback tests, since I'm on a Mac, but I'm pretty sure the PIC is receiving something from the Core's MIDI-In port now. I'm going to give up and go to bed now, but in the morning I'll try with another MIDI interface, and see if that helps. It does look like something has changed here since I ran the tests- maybe something wasn't soldered quite right and I've fixed the joint by soldering on the testing LED. I'm definitely getting a different error message now. Hmmm... is that good? Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  12. Hi stryd_one, cheers for getting back to me so quickly! I did try a basic search for 'Unexpected upload request', which didn't come up with anything. If found quite a few posts when I did an advanced search though. Anyway... I've started going through the steps in http://www.ucapps.de/howto_debug_midi.html My Core board seems to pass the first test- ie I connected an LED between pics 26 and 31 of the main chip, and it lit, and seemed to flicker each time MIOS studio sent out a packet. The page just says 'try the next test if this one doesn't give a positive result', but doesn't indicate what conclusions I should draw if it does..... Hmm... still no nearer to knowing what the problem is... Alex
  13. I'm trying to upload MIOS to my CORE module, but I keep getting "Error: Received unexpected upload request" messages, and the upload is eventually aborted after 16 such errors. Anyone any idea what might be the problem? Cheers, Alex
  14. Cheers tel3, yeah, it's just some bits of clear heatshrink. It's a temporary measure until I get my crimp-pin housings so I can make up some proper wires. what I didn't show in the pic is that the I had to solder each wire together in the middle- as I don't have a crimping tool, I took the wires from 2 C64 keyboard connectors and soldered them together. I doesn't look elegant, but hopefully it will work.... Here's the Core, SID, PSU and LCD screwed to a bit of old MDF I had kicking around: I'm currently trying to get MIOS studio working on one of my Macs so I can upload thr firmware. Fingers crossed..... Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  15. Reused crimp-pins from C64 keyboard connector. Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  16. Nice one tel3! I'm going to try that right now! Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  17. That's great Mr modnaR, I've just bought one. Now to get some crimp pins and housings. There are some really nice colour-coded wires I can scavenge from the C64s, so I should be able to keep track of what's going to where. Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  18. That looks like a good plan. I'm going to get myself a crimping tool and make up my own, I think. Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  19. Ah, thanks for all the great ideas guys! I think, as th0mas suggests, I'll just try fitting the chip anyway, and see what happens. HL-SDKs idea sound scary- how heat-sensitive is the SID chip, I wonder? I'm not great with a soldering-iron, sadly, hence my previous post re. frying one of the solder pads on my Core board while trying to desolder the voltage regulator. Practice makes perfect, I guess. It also tends to make things broken, in my case ;-) Cheers, Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  20. I've done a very silly thing: I've managed to damage one of the holes in the DIL socket that accepts a leg of the SID chip, in my SmashTV SID board. I, very stupidly pushed one of the probes in there a little too hard when I was testing the voltage, and now the metal contacts have been bent back so that they won't grip the leg of the chip properly. I haven't tried inserting the SID yet, but I think it's unlikely it's going to work. Now, I can't imagine anyone else has been this stupid, but can anyone, off the top of their heads, think of anything I can do to remedy the situation, short of desoldering and replacing the DIL socket? I've had a bad experience already desoldering something from one of these boards, so if I can possibly avoid having to attempt it again..... Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  21. Hi modnaR, I'm in the UK. I thought maybe some sort of crimping too would be the way to go, but the only ones I could find were for cat5/RJ45-type cables. I've been spending so much money buying the wrong things recently- just because I don't know what things are called. Mind you, I was in Maplins (UK electronics supplier) the other day, and the man behind the counter clearly didn't even know what solder was... seriously. He tried to engage me in conversation about his speaker crossovers, and it gradually became apparent that, while I don't know much myself, his knowledge of electronics rated on the minus scale. Scary.... Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  22. Talking of crimp pin connectors- what tool would I use to fit these? Newbie question, I'm afraid, but without knowing the correct terminology, I'm having great difficulty tracking down the right tools (and parts, for that matter). Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  23. Hiya, newbie question, I'm afraid: What tool would I need to fit something line this: http://www.avishowtech.com/mbhp/images/c2p.jpg Cheers, Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  24. Hiya, what's the best way to connect power from an optimised PSU to the MBSid board (mine is the SmashTV version)? I ask because the connection diagram says the 5V power from the PSU should be connected to 2 pins of J2. Does this preclude using a ribbon-cable to connect the Core and Sid modules? Is it better to use seperate wires, maybe heat-shrinked together? Any thoughts, anyone? Alex http://www.toneburst.net
  25. Hi tel3, I keep meaning to buy some soldering braid, but keep forgetting to order some. Having screwed up one of the pads on my Core board, mind you, I'm a bit scared of getting things too hot again. It might be a good solution when it comes to desoldering C64 bits from the board though. Cheer, Alex http://www.toneburst.net
