toadstool Posted December 9, 2010 Report Share Posted December 9, 2010 Hi all, FOR SALE: 5x 6581s and 2x 8580s I thought I would offer these here, first refusal stylee, before I put them on the 'bay. Prices reflect a combination of what others are selling them for and the amount of time I took to test them. They are all harvested from various C64s I picked up here and there and are all fully functional. I have tested them all using Plogue's SID benchmark program on a real C64 (http://ploguechipsounds.blogspot.com/2010/05/one-page-basic-sid-benchmark.html) and have recorded the output for each SID which you can download below. I also tested them using the MSSIAH cartridge and did some basic testing playing SID files via my MB6582 and via the SID player application in my Ultimate 1541-II. Pretty exhaustive testing all in all! The only functions I did not test exhaustively were the ones detailed on Plogue chipsounds' Blog, namely Pulse Width Modulation sweeps, ring mod or hard sync, though ring mod and hard sync type sounds worked in the SID files that I played. You can use the audio files for the correct sounding chips on Plogue's Blog as reference to compare with my recordings of these chips for sale. The 6581s are £24 each and the 8580s are £29 each. Postage in the UK via Royal Mail Recorded is £2.50 flat rate for up to 2 SIDs, any more than that and I will have to send using Special Delivery (for insurance purposes) which will cost £5. Postage to other countries is at cost and I'll get a personal quote for anyone interested. The SIDs in the photos are in chronological order, top to bottom, the benchmark audio files are named after the date code printed on the SID. The fifth SID down (a 6581R3) has the print nearly worn off as can be seen in the photo. However, I can confirm this is a real live working SID. Most of the 6581s have a strange amplitude modulation effect or anomalous aliasing during the Pulse+Saw wave tests (see Plogue's Blog regarding this) and I believe it can be considered normal. It occurs to some degree or another on virtually every single 6581 and 6581R3 that I have tested including the four that I own. The 6581R4ARs that I have don't seem to suffer from this as badly. You will notice that the SID date marked 2083 has this strange effect but more pronounced than the others. All I can say is that I can not hear a difference when the SID is in operation in the MB6582 or the MSSIAH..... Can anyone enlighten me as to why this happens or what it means? It's the 6581 5084 Korea AH395568 2. Could there be more chips with this exact number, or is this the same chip you, toadstool, was selling? Just curious.
