bosone
i will soon probably go to an "exposition" of old ocmputer in which there will be (hopefully) also a market. a great occasion to find some SID...so my question is: i want to find the 8580 model, not the 6581... should i look for the "new" model of C=64? (the one with the "new" case)?i hope also to find something similar to a 2U rack, in which possibly install 4 SID unit.

Guest cem3340
Unless you have details of the production serial numbers this can be a little tricky. I general, the old "breadbox" case with dark brown keys all contain 6581's. The wedge shaped case units all contained 8580. (originally was to be named 6582). Keep in mind that the original "breadbox" case was brought back after complaints from customers that many of the "addons" they bought for the 64 would not fit effectively on or into the wedge case. Thus, many of the very last units produced were built into the original case styling. These can be identified by having the "breadbox" case but having light brown keys.As a little side note, yes the two SID's sound different. This is due to a change in the internals of the SID which affect the operation of the filter. The 6581 contained a few bugs which were ironed out with the introduction of the 8580. At the time of its release, many many of the synths were going digital, clean sound was the order of the day. Little did they know that dirt would always remain popular ;D Little side note two. What people are now doing with the SID is what the designer of the chip originally hoped would occur. At the time of production, it was hoped 3rd party vendors would build the SID into true keyboard synths. Such is life
