Matrix Mode LED Wiring?

This might be more for Wilba but since I know he's a popular and busy dude, I thought I would ask here. For the Matrix Mode feature of the MB-6582, I know there is Matrix and Meter modes, but on the DOUT wiring page, it simply says mode 1 or 2 and I don't know which is which. I tried figuring it out from setup_mb6582.asm but was having trouble figuring out what's going on (I'm still a bit confused by how the transistor sink works).

Any thoughts? I know I can just guess and hope and then just swap some wires but I'd like to avoid having to switch wiring around from how I planned on documenting it (particularly for printed boards).
