Shiftone Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 (edited) Ok, I'm going to build a little stereo SID box for kicks. I've got several old C64s kicking around that I'm going to tear chips out of. I'm looking at using Smash's Core 8 and 2 of his SID boards for my build. So other than these 3 kits what else will I need? Which PID should I get? If I want an LCD and minimal control surface - what will that require. Thanks for helping. I'll try and run a complete build log when I get started to help other clueless people like me. Edited March 29, 2011 by Shiftone Quote
rosch Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 (edited) hi, welcome! you'll just need 1x DINX4 module (half stuffed is enough if you're not planning to expand the CS) 1-8 bank stick chips (24LC512) 1x PIC 18F4685 (SmashTV's already come with MIOS) other than that 9 tactile switches, 1 encoder + knob, at least 2 midi jacks, 1/4" jacks for outputs (and inputs?), a psu (which one depending on SIDs) also you could buy some ribbon cable and IDC connectors (have a look at the core module at the store for which ones you need) you'll have to do some research anyway, all info is in the mbhp section at www.ucapps.de also you'll find a lot of threads here with all kinds of info. edit: the pic shows the same setup, albeit ghetto style temporary installation in a cardboard box AND the modules aren't from Smash. the cables thet go up from the DINX2 and the big ribbon go to the lid where i have a little veroboard with the controls. the cables that go out to the left side are for other purposes. Very helpful thank you. Where are your boards from? Is there a cheaper European source rather than Smash? Quote
rosch Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 hehe they just look cheaper, cause i did the installation i got these from Mike's. just do a search in the forum for smash or mike, there's lot of info available. their prices are about the same i'd say. but there are some differences regarding the boards, silkscreen and the choice of connectors. also they partially stock different things, like for example SmashTV has some modules that Mike doesn't carry, also the female crimp connectors & crimping tool. mike otoh offers a small 8x bankstick board (in the pic upper left) but you can find all these info about the suppliers and projects/modules on the www.ucapps.de page, you'll have to read there anyways.
