Hi,

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a near completed MB-6582. (No, I'm not being lazy, it had 8 SID's and the price was right!) I'm currently going over everything before powering it up and have question regarding the power supply.

QUOTE FROM CONSTRUCTION GUIDE:

There are three different ways of supplying power to the base PCB:

â–

PSU Option A: C64 power supply, generating only 9v supply (no 12v) … exactly like the prototype, it converts the 9v AC coming from the C64 power supply. This option only allows use of SIDs that need 9v (8580 or 6582), the 6581 needs 12v. One 9v voltage regulator is used to supply 9v to all the SIDs.

â–

PSU Option B: C64 power supply, generating 9v and 12v supply … almost exactly like the "C64 PSU Optimized" circuit, which adds the 9v DC to the 5v DC to create 14v DC, enough to get the 12v required for 6581 SIDs. Instead of a voltage regulator on each SID module, there are just two (one 9v and one 12v)

I've attached a photo of my power supply, which I'm pretty sure is "Option A" The only reason I'm asking is because, the original builder has soldered in V2 & V3. From what I can tell, this PSU and those SID's, dont require either of these regulators.

Can someone please confirm this for me.

Cheers, Ghali.

Hi Ghali,

The MB-6582 had 8 SID's .

What type ( types ) it are. Diferent Sid types has diferent supply voltages 9 or 12 volts.

Janis

All eight are 6582A

The power supply is right for for both options. To see which one has been chosen by the builder of the MB6582 baseboard, we´d need a hi-res picture of that.

Please test the power supply for correct voltages (9V AC, 5V DC) before connecting it to your MIDIbox -> the old Commodore PSUs are not too reliable and can fry your MB6582:

You may not have all the pins depicted in the above picture, that is perfectly ok (different revisions of the plug).

Thanks for the replys guys,

The only camera I have here is a piece of crap so I wont try to post hi res pics. The original builder has definatly built the board with option B. 100%

The power supply is right for for both options.

This comment has answered my concerns perfectly. Thank you.

I'll get my multimeter out now and test the voltage of the supply before anything further

1st hurdle, clear!

cheers, ghali
