gregbo
I am on the end of the rope. I have returned to the old SmashTv V2 core with PIC18f452. At first I had to replace rectifier. (The old one didn't work.) I connected it to MIOS studio - nothing. I started all recommended troubleshooting checks they all passed. All voltages and all checks using LEDs from "MIDI Interface Troubleshooting Guide" went OK but there is nothing in MIDI in window of MIOS studio. I have ElCheapo USB Midi cable from ebay like this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-IN-OUT-MIDI-Interface-Cable-Converter-PC-to-Music-Keyboard-Adapter-Cord-atp-/180888881833?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a1dd14aa9) that passes loop-back test (I made a cable from 2 MIDI sockets) The MIDI in light flashes when core is connected to it. There are no shorts on PCB (checked with X10 magnifier.) I attempted to connect to the core with MBHP_LTC module with the same negative result. What next? ilmenator
Hi gregbo, welcome here! Have you set the correct PIC ID in MIOS Studio? If the PIC was purchased from SmashTV, it should have a sticker on with the ID. Are you using the latest MIOS Studio version? Has the core ever worked before? Can you connect an LCD to the core, does it show any message?
gregbo
Thanks for an answer. Yes I did set ID according to the sticker. In fact I suspected a missprogramed PIC so I begun to change ID in MIOS studio and query it starting with 0 and ending on 20. I downloaded MIOS studio yesterday. The core never worked before. LCD shows row of black rectangles in the upper row.
ilmenator
Okay, let's make sure you get a proper connection between MIOS Studio and Core: 1) Connect MIDI In of Core with MIDI Out of your MIDI interface and vice versa 2) Make sure you select the proper MIDI interface ports (both IN and OUT) in MIOS Studio (if you only have one MIDI interface connected, only one shows up - however, there might be some virtual ports for whatever reason on your system) 3) With the Core switched on, press the "Query" button, with the ID set according to the sticker 4) Do you have other MIDI equipment that you can verify your MIDI interface with? If all that does not help, it might be the optocoupler on your core board that is at fault. You could try to measure its output while you send a larger block of SysEx data (or a continuous stream of e.g. controller data). Optocouplers have a tendency to be faulty for some reason. I have had a number of them dying on me or being DOA.

I have suspected an optocoupler as well but after I pulled it out and performed the test as per http://www.ucapps.de/howtodebug/mbhp_core_opto_test.gif from midi troubleshooting page and it worked. I was getting 5.06 V. By the way, measured with my digital multimeter all voltages of the core were 5.06V.
ilmenator
The voltage you measure is well within the specs, so there is no problem with that. Could you upload a hi-res, not blurry picture of your core board's front and backside? Sometimes another pair of eyes can spot something suspicious. I was testing the board again and for some reason the smoke came from 2200uF capacitor, rectifier bulged before I had time to unplug it. I can't do anything until I replace said parts. I assume there is some problem with power supply part, but i amunable to test it before the trip to RadioShack.
