Encoders for Sequencer V2

I found the following part in the partlist:

for example ALPS STEC16B02 - This is an detented encoder.

But in the PDF "mbhp_dinx4_16enc_alps_stec16b03.pdf" is written 16b03 NOT detented!!!

Do I have to use the detented or not detented one? What is the different?

detented rotary encoders means in german "Endlosregler mit mechanischer Rastung"

detented means when you turn the encoder you can feel little bumps as it turns.
