I recently aquired a C64 that was made in Canada, and when I went to desolder the SID I noticed that it was in a IC socket rather thand soldered directly to the board. Needless to say I was a happy camper. Has anyone else seen this?

Hi,

Yup.. I think really depends on where it was manufactured/version/batch..

Like I've got a C64c ("New case version") with a 6581 SID soldered to PCB.. I was greatly disappointed, when I opened it. (Well, maybe not the worst 5 euros spent, anyway ;))

I guess I'm lucky here too - I have a C64C (an early revision, I'll keep this machine intact - I'll use the PSU though) with a 6581 in a socket, and for my future MBSID I bought two C64C's, one came with a 6581 and the other with a 8580, both in sockets. So I have yet to see a soldered SID... :)

By the way, the different revision C64 PCB's are hugely different!

Hi, Jurpo.

I know you're a Finn, like me.. What kind of MBSID are you going to build? OR are you looking for 6851s or 8580s.. I bought that C64C as I was sure it would have 8580 inside.

Finland rules... Just not in these Olympic Games! :)

I'm going for a MBSID with the full Control Surface. Two SIDS, one 6581 and one 8580. C64 PSU.  Already ordered a lot of stuff from Voti and Claudia.

Two 6581's was my primary target, but I'm totally happy with getting the 6581/8580 configuration. I might go for 4 SIDs later, but first I'll have to battle my way through building the 2 SID thing and see how I like it!

So Moebius - are you saying you stock SIDs? And how do you make the cases for your MB projects? Are there a lot of MB'ers in our luvly country?

Olympics, phew.. It's bit like "Eurovision song contest" for us, nowadays ;)

I'm not a SID/MOD cRAzEE like some Finns (I was a Speccy user, really ;)), and more interested in building a synth :)

So, I'm getting 8580s (R5s, even) (More musical filter(?!), and better S/N ratio), and I think my 6851 will be spare.. Well, C64s SHOULD be pretty easy to get hold of here in Finland, anyway.. Still I think I'm going to buy each I can find.

I haven't really thought that much 'bout cases. I have some 6U 19" rack cases, which just need new panels. And some of those can be cut to 2U. And for the panels, maybe 2mm aluminum, or 3mm acrylic.

Bye, Moebius

p.s. I think that adding up "suspected" Finns in this forum and from the gallery it's five.. just five.. There must be more hiding somewhere.

Well, I'm more a heavy metal person, but then a lot of the SID sounds have something in common with the electric guitar (my main instrument besides singing). And I suppose that listening to Maniacs of Noise, Hubbard and Daglish tunes as a child must have made an impact on my musical perspective... :) I love the SID sound, always have. My main motivation in this project is to be able to actually PLAY these sounds myself!

My 8580 is an R5, too. The S/N of a 8580 is a clear plus, but what I have learned from listening to the demo clips and emulated sounds (well, they are just emulated so I know I shouldn't weigh this too much - I haven't really compared my actual C64's SIDs), I like the 6581 a lot better, especially for the filters in the bass register, that to me sound a lot warmer, fatter and livelier. A far more impressive growl there, than the more metallic ringing sound the 8580 seems to give. But then, the 8580 seems to me a bit clearer and punchier in the treble area. So I'm happy pursuing the 6581/8580 way - to get the best of both worlds.

Yeah, there are still a lot of C64's floating around in Finland, but it's all on Huuto.net nowadays - haven't really seen them around where I live. When lucky, the prices are ok...

Anybody here who wants to make money with me?

Idea: Produce *lots* of C64s with old 8580s/6581s. Or just only the 6581s/8580s - would even be enough. The plans are out there!  ;D
