Palm PDA as display/controller?

This site http://www.sirpic.com/ has some information and source code on interfacing to PIC projects from a Palm PDA, either via RS232 or infrared.

There are also easily made DIY MIDI interfaces for Palms and various software at http://www.crudites.org/soundventures/handheld-music/ - Currently down; here it is via archive.org

There are also Java virtual machines for Palm (JSynth on a Palm?)

Just a few random thoughts...

hmmm.....More fuel to the fire: ;D

GenerExe's XPad is a Visual IDE for realtime programming, simulation and compilation for: Microchip PIC 12F675/629, PIC 16F84, PIC 16F628, PIC 16C715, PIC16F877/876, Atmel AT89CX051, Intel 87C52, Philips 87LPC76X, Motorola 68HC11, 68K-based PalmOs Devices

AND MORE...

State-machine based programming, where you can develop the Palm ware and PIC ware side by side........
Visual Point & Click & Drag & Drop Object-Based Cross-compiler-tool for RealTIME embedded System Software...
Works a lot like MAX/MSP, your program is built like a flowchart in a graphical environment, without much hand coding.......

Ouch, I just got tje idea: "Hey, how about I plug my PDA into a midi box and make it work as a interactive menu; effect control; status display....". I have in mind something like Pioneer DJM-909. Good thing zbout this approach is that CORE and PDA can interchange only comands, all the graphics and touch detection is handled by PDA itself....weery nasty developer toy if you have one PDA laying around.

BUT, first to finish my basic TDS MIDIBOX.

Yes, i've had similar thoughts.  The PalmOrb project emulates a Matrix Orbital LCD over either serial or infra-red, and it's open-source  ;D  There's already support for Matrix Orbital LCDs in MIOS, and with some custom code, button presses for menu selection could surely be passed back to the CORE over an IIC or serial connection.

The older Palms with serial ports (basically M series and below) would be great for running a small MIDI sequencer like MiniMusic - 4 tracks + drum sequencer (4x SID??) - but I doubt very much that the same machine would run a decent enough Java to support JSynth, VMIDIBox or MIOS Studio.  Either Minimusic or the handheldmusic site listed earlier has a basic CC virtual fader thing somewhere.

There's a bi-directional (no there's not - where did I see that?) Palm serial <> MIDI port available from IttyMIDI, but their app is just a player, not a true sequencer.  Directions for building a Palm MIDI out cable are on the handheldmusic site.

I've thought about using a Gameboy as an LCD emulator/control surface too, but you'd have to write the code from scratch, and probably build a cartridge.

This has cropped up elsewhere on these forums - search for "Palm"

I've added a link to the archive.org backup of handheldmusic's site.  From there you can still link through to some live sites, though you may have to hand edit the URLs on the new pages.  Linking straight through takes you to archived pages, not all of which preserve images.

Here's the archive of the bi-directional  Palm serial to MIDI port.

Not that you probably need one for MIDIBox

I can't find any live links for the crudite's soundventures (handheldmusic) software, or for the related dsperado software.  Looks like minimusic.com is it for Palm MIDI ... for now  ;D

I guess now the compatible palms are so old, most of the developers have lost interest.
