Phasmatis Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 I have an old AdLib sound card based on the Yamaha YM3812, a.k.a. OPL2. My question is, could the OPL2 be used in place of the OPL3 in the MIdibox FM?Datasheets, in case you need them:http://www.oplx.com/opl3/docs/ymf262.pdfhttp://www.datasheet4u.com/download.php?id=285414 (http://www.datasheet4u.com/html/Y/M/3/YM3812_ETC.pdf.html)Their connections look similar, and the OPL3 is supposedly backward-compatible. But does the Midibox FM use stereo sound, or anything else the OPl2 doesn't have?
TK. Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 Hi,unfortunately MIDIbox FM uses dedicated OPL3 specific features, such as 4 OP FM sounds. Backward compatible 2 OP FM sounds are not supported, as they are too boring anyhow, and would lead to an inconsistent synth architecture.Best Regards, Thorsten.
Jaicen Posted August 30, 2007 Report Posted August 30, 2007 You could however use it in an FM expander for the C64 ;)
