A blurb about in the latest Nuts&Volts mag. caught my attention

http://standards.ieee.org/announcements/p1639app.html

Anyone with a technical and manufacturing interest in MIDI is invited to join the IEEE P1639 Working Group. Other who might want to join include those who seek to explore DMIDI's creative possibilities and those with expertise in Ethernet-based and wireless LAN networking infrastructures.

You could probably do this with an embedded Ethernet chip or kit and one of the new platform-independant Ethernet to wireless adapters, and a wireless card in your PC.

Or you could try building a circuit to convert MIDI data to/from a radio or infra-red signal at each end, and simply plug it into a MIDI port.
