  1. Another good news: Ploytec offered the possibility to layout our own PCB, Nils is working on it. :)

The PCB should have the same size like the original Ploytec evaluation board, otherwise we would have to pay more money for additional area - therefore the focus is to make it more DIY friendly (e.g. replacing SMD resistor/caps by through-hole parts)

I happen to like soldering chip resistors and caps, especially if there are already some surface mount components on a board.  I am a big fan of component footprints that can accomodate chip components as well as thru-hole.  (I know I'm in the minority, but just wanted to throw that in)

  2. I just got off the phone with our distributor (near Montreal).  I am told that they have received part of the order from Re'an (not the whole shipment), and they are waiting for Re'an to advise them of the status of the remainder.  I didn't ask how many they had received, because I don't want to have to pay to ship the order to me in two parts.  I expect a response "real soon now".

  3. Give it a update about the shipping nebula??

The written order confirmation I received says May 18 at the latest, so if I don't hear anything by then I will follow up.  I already bitched and complained a lot just to get these things ordered, so I don't want to pester them again unless they are late to deliver.

I will update the title of this thread with the status of the order.

  4. I think that since the chat went down, these threads are getting stranger...

When the chat first appeared I was kind of against it, because I was afraid that good knowledge would become exclusive to those who hung around in the chat.  Then I realized that it was a really huge community builder, where ideas got exchanged, and things like bulk order status got casually mentioned ... and we all got to know each other a bit better.  So I would try to drop in a few times a week.

    I miss the chat.

  5. Sorry Sasha and everyone, I see I wasn't completely clear ... I said this:

Delivery will take up to 4 weeks, and I will immediately mail them out to all who have ordered.

Even though I requested that all payments be made (or accounted for) by April 20, I actually placed the order a week beforehand, at my own risk.  So I still don't expect to receive the knobs for a couple weeks (The order was placed on April 11).

I promise I'm not running anywhere with anybody's money.  I've handled a big bulk for displays and I hope to do more knobs very soon.

If anybody is uncomfortable and needs to see my "paper trail" on this I will share, privately.

  6. Wow, I'm amazed I totally missed this thread until now.  I would like an opportunity to chime in, if I may:

Typos / whatever aside, I REALLY like Sasa's panel layout with the TR-909 font.  I have done graphics work and I understand the principle of a garish font like that being primarily used for headlines, however in this instance it is readable.  The font may look a little campy, but I really like that - it looks like something out of the 1982 Battlestar Galactica series.

I like "RUN/STOP" on two separate lines, and the "/" serves to tighten it up by making both lines appear the same width.  Also by putting RUN/STOP on two separate lines, the label is bigger, making that button appear more important - which it is!

I am grateful for all my gear with labels for the jacks along the top of the panel.  Please don't lose this, it makes it way easier to set up in a hurry when you can't look at the back of the instrument.

The "wave" switch does look a little lonely, somehow ... I don't mean to be an armchair critic but I think it could maybe benefit from a circle around the switch hole?

Anyway - I see Kartoshka has posted an eps (which I can't open while I'm here at work) so I probably should be looking at that before I post this.  Oh well ... just wanted to throw my two cents in.  Maybe, as was done with the MB-6582 panels ordered by Altitude, once we have a couple of ideas we can bring it to a vote?

  7. My mom has an organ that used those levers.  In addition to min and max, they have two detents in them.  I used to play that organ all the time as a kid, and now, almost 20 years later, only one of the 30-ish levers on her organ is slightly intermittent, and I mean slightly - it's barely worth mentioning.

And BTW - there is no CS80 bragging allowed on this forum.  Go to analogue heaven or something.  Grrrrrrrrr

  8. I wonder if similar "things" are available with a round shape - not ice cubes but maybe "ice rods". I find the rectangular shape rather hard to realize for DIY front panels, but would immediately go for round ones. Do they exist somewhere?

    Best regards, ilmenator

Jeez, I don't see what all the fuss is about -- just use a rectangular drill bit!

  9. I used S.A.M. for a few of my own projects back in the 1980's.  I had a lot of fun with it.  Usually I'd sample S.A.M. and play the phrases back via MIDI.  Back then I also had a 4-track cassette deck and a tape sync box, and I did one track where I wanted a lot of S.A.M. speech (way more than my S-330 could accomodate), so I did drop records to tape live from the C64.

I believe SAM worked by toggling the SID output off and on fast enough to produce audio.  I don't think it would be possible to emulate S.A.M. or most other real-time SID applications over MIDI, because MIDI is too slow.

It might be possible to implement some SAM features right on the PIC.  But in some very wise yet unattributed words of wisdom previously stated on this forum, if you're wondering how hard that would be, the answer is most probably "too hard for you".
