I ordered a new PIC (I intended to buy second core and SID modules to build a dual SID anyway , so it just hurried the process... and added some bucks to the budget for the PIC replacement :( ) Gonna be more carefull next time. Still don't know what happened.

in the design of the C64 optimized PSU there is a bridge rectifier b40c800. I can't find one around. There is one availbable in the C64, it's a Ba20, is it ok to use it ? or can I use a B40C3700 instead ? Or use the b40c800 that is on the core (i'm building a dual SID) ? is this one still needed in the case of the use of the optimized C64 PSU ? another one: can the 7809 used in the PSU be replaced by a 7812, I have one on the C64 ?

Je suis en train de faire ma SIDbox et tout ce passait bien jusqu'a présent. J'avais monté le core, le LCD et le SID, fais l'alim(en utilisant celle du C64) et hier j'ai entendu le son de la bête pour la première fois. Mais aujourd'hui j'ai eu un court-circuit et depuis, c'est mort. Le LCD m'indique une suite de carré et plus d'activité MIDI. Je me demande si j'ai pas grillé le PIC ? Le fusible de l'alim à laché aussi. De plus le régulateur de voltage chauffe beaucoup et l'ensemble s'éteint au bout d'un moment... J'ai vérifié les voltages, et j'ai bien les 5V là où il faut les avoir sur le IC1 et IC2(j'ai juste vérifié les principaux). Par contre en entrée j'ai 9V AC et si je mesure au niveau du condensateur C5 (entre le + et le -) et du régulateur de voltage j'ai des voltages tout fou, du genre 20-24V AC. Comment c'est possible ? Qu'est ce qui a pu grillé ? Même si le PIC est mort, il doit y avoir un autre soucis, non ? Dois-je verifier tout les voltages et quelles sont les valeurs à avoir ? 9v AC et 5V DC ? aie, aie, ca avait si bien commencé...

I just started mounting the core and my SID and it all went very smooth:soldering core,SID, LCD, uploading MIOS and Midibox and I heard it scream for the first time yesterday. However today I had some short circuit(probably when I moved the different modules some cables must have interferred with some other) and since nothign appears on the LCD(it lights but I got this first range of 'full square' caracter). And when I plug in the Midi cables there is no incoming message either. I used the C64 PSU and when the problem occured, it blew the PSU fuse. I designed the PSU using the mbhp_sid_c64_psu.pdf. I checked the voltage on the core, and I get 5V where I should get them (I didn't tested all the connections, just the main ones, IC1 and IC2)and 12V on the SID. I noticed when I turn the unit on again, the PIC and the 7805 voltage regulator are getting very hot. I don't remember if it was the case prior to the incident. And if I keep the unit on for some time, it goes off by itself... Can anyone help me trace the problem ? Is there anyway to tell if a PIC is fried ? if the voltages are OK, does it mean the other component are safe ? I would really appreciate some help on that one...

I bought a LCD, which datasheet can be found here: http://www.datasheetarchive.com/datasheet/pdf/10/1006625.html I was told it should be ok for a use with MidiBOX (Sid in my case) but just wonder about voltage, if it's ok and if I have to do something special with voltage or just solder the connection and don't bother. I'll use a C64 PSU with a 6581 and make the C64 optimized PSU (step C) connection. Thanx in advance

I'm french ;) though I speak german. .. I had noticed the reichelt blue ones. But take 50 ones at .50 it's 25 euros ! Whereas I can get 50 for 6 euros, that's 0.12, which is close to the price of a standard green/red/yellow led, isn't it ? So why hesitate if they work and the only issue can be adressed by a simple resistor ? Well, ok, i AM still hesitating so I wait for a GOOD reason not to put those nice blue led on my future all chrome desktop SID (btw I got a blue LCD too ;D )

Am i right ? I want to make a SID with matrix. If I understand the pdf correctly, with only one DOUT you can put the 54 matrix LEDs and there is still room for 16 more LEDs, no ?

Les touches du A500 me plaisent bien. Ca me rappelle des souvenirs... Le C64 je préfererrais ne pas le désosser et le vendre pour pièce en état(manque le SID et l'alim). Donc si c'est pas trop chiant à faire ca m'interesse. Idem pour les connecteurs bankstick. Pour le chassis, oui je ne pensais pas au chassis rack, mais éventuellement dans l'avenir à une de tes fameuses mixettes 'brulées'. Ton prix sera le mien. Merci beaucoup d'avance :D

I'd like to use blue leds for the matrix of my SID. I've read that these are way too bright compared to standard ones and you simply have to replace the resistor of the dout and put a 470 one. :o :o :D Alors moi ca m'interesse et ca me concerne je crois (revenu mensuel < 500 euros). Pour l'alimentation je suis dég, je viens d'acheter un C64 assez cher juste pour récupérer l'alim. Bon, du coup j'ai récupéré un deuxiéme SID, faut pas déconner non plus ;D Alors ce dont j'ai besoin... euh, je vais dire ce que je veux faire ce sera plus facile de voir si tu peux m'aider ou pas: Une MIDIBOX SID simple(ou dual du coup) avec un LCD(j'en ai un), une matrice, des boutons et des encodeurs(5 ou 10 je sais pas encore). Le tout dans un boitier plutôt desktop que rack. Pour les boutons menu( les 5 sous le LCD) je voudrais mettre des touches de clavier de C64 par ex. Pour la matrice, des petits boutons simples (comme ceux de la SID de Thorsten à priori). Ajouter quelques autre boutons pour changer de layer pour les encoders. Alors les touches de C64 ou clavier ca m'interesse si ca correspond a ce que je veux faire(je suis une bille en electronique) et un chassis ca m'interesse aussi. Mais ca presse pas ca. Un connecteur de bankstick ca m'interesse aussi. (je voudrais avoir genre deux banques internes et une externe. C'est faisable non ?) Je suis sur Lyon au fait. Je veux pas prendre tout le stock, mais si tu peux me dire ce qui peux convenir dans ce que j'ai dit ou si tu as des questions, n'hésite pas...

I intent to use 5 keys of the C64 keyboard to act as the 5 LCD menu buttons. Can I simply cannibalize the C64 keyboard swithc or do I have to get some other switch and put the 'cap' of the key on it ?

Qu'entendais-tu par modifier les encodeurs via les patch ? 6 c'est pour le lcd: 5 + 1 pour le menu. J"imagine que si je prends un encodeur avec switch, ca fera office de bouton menu, non ? Du coup oui, je pense prendre un 2eme DIN Bon, je vais en avoir d'autres à venir, faudra s'accrocher ;D

Thanx for the reply ! Yes I meant Buttons and encoders. Guess if I had another DIN I can indeed had a fifth encoder and use buttons to switch layers. That's a good idea. The whole idea was to avoid the use of a second DIN but I guess I'll do it. Since I'll add the matrix, I guess I need 2 DOUT for the leds and there will be leds left for the layers too. I'll probably need help in programming but first I need help to build the SID ;) Thanx again

I plan on making a SID with one SID, LCD and the matrix. Since 21 buttons and 1 encoder are necessar, there is room on one DIN for 4 more knobs. I assume on one DIN you can mix buttons and switch. So for 1 sid with LCD and Matrix I need at least 6 + 15 buttons = 21 buttons. Now, the important question I asked myself is: Is it possible to change the mapping of these 4 knobs whenever I want or do they have to be mapped in the cs_menu_etcetc file once and for all ? For instance can I have the first button to be mapped to cutoff in one patch and then assign it to env 1 attack in another patch (or even change it in the same patch) ? In that case 4 encoders could be enough to have fun and control many parameters...

Bon, j'ai pas de réponse sur le forum principal ::) Alors, donc ce que j'aimerais faire c'est une midibox SID avec 1 module SID, la matrice et quelques encodeurs. D'après ce que j'ai ly avec un module DIN on peut utiliser 32 boutons ou 16 encodeurs. La question est: 1) peut on panacher sur un même module boutons et encodeurs ? A priori oui mais comme je suis une bille en électronique... Donc si je veux un écran LCD + la matrice j'ai besoin de 6 + 15 boutons, n'est ce pas ? Donc il reste si mes calculs sont bons de la place sur le DIN pour 4 encodeurs, right ? Ce qui m'amène la question suivante:2) peut on reassigner facilement les CCs des encodeurs de la SID. Par exemple avoir une configuration pour les 4 encodeurs du style Cutoff, resonance etc sur un patch, puis reassigner d'autres parametres(par exemple attack, decay etc) sur un autre patch (ou changer la fonction n'importe quand) ? Ou alors la fonction des 4 encodeurs est fixe et défini dans le fichier cs_menu_etcetc Autres questions: je compte acheter des kits tout faits.3) D'après mes calculs SmashTV serait moins cher que son homologue allemand(vu le cours du dollar), mais y a-t-il des frais de douanes ? Dans ce cas ce ne serait pas très interessant... Et enfin 4) Sachant que j'ai un lcd (cité plus haut), pour programmer le bootloader, quel pic dois-je choisir ? La page de calcul sur le site de smashTV m'a dérouté. Que dois-je choisir pour I/O type , LCD ? Je ne compte pas au départ avoir de module LTC (mais peut-étre plus tard).
