Old version VS. new version core/sid/mios ?

I bought the PCB's/pic chip & parts to build a core and sid module back in 2003 (!) and never got around to building them. The sid pcb says: 2003 MBHP_SID on it, and the core pcb says: MBHP_US_CORE_V1

I think the label on the mios pic chip says: MIOS BOOTSTRAP LOADER V1_1a

I am contemplating weather or not i want to get the new version PCB's and pic chip/mios from avishowtech.com (and maybe AIN & DIN pcb's)

Could someone please tell me the differences between the version of parts i have, and the most recent version(MIOS/PIC chip - SID & CORE PCB's) ? Does the newer version have more function or better sound ? What reasons would one possibly prefer the old version or new version ?

Thanks.

Hi!

I'm currently running my MIDIBox SID as ver1, only because I haven't gotten around to the conversion.  V1 is no longer supported as a platform, but the folks here are always willing to help.  The big issue in the conversion from V1 to V2 is the PIC controller used. V1 uses the 18F452 while the V2 uses the 18F4685.  The complete conversion process can be found here;

But, being that you already have the parts, I'd first build the V1 as you already have what you need to get started, you can always convert later, using the Core and SID module you already have.  They'll work fine, but as always, check the schematics for changes.

I will say that the specs and functions of V2 are REALLY impressive, check the DEMOs.  I've gotta get my lazy butt in gear and get started on it.  Read through the excellent V2 docs to see what I mean.

Have fun!

Check out the MIDIbox SID V2 page at www.ucapps.de (link is from the front page, direct link http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_sid.html).

I'm not sure about the old version of the core PCB but you might be able to just get a new 18F4685 PIC (about $10 from SmashTV) and then use V2 using your current PCBs.  But you'll have to do some research to verify your board will work with the new PIC.
